    Hi there,

Firstly congratulations on the new arrival. Ok here goes. My youngest is 5 months and I had a post partum flare up which resulted in a thyroid storm. I knew (like you ) after the baby that my thyroid had kicked off and started to feel very ill. At my 6 week check up my GP noticed the sweat was dripping off me and checked my bloods. They were going off , however, over in the UK the protocol is usually to allow it to run overactive for a while to see if it then either goes into remission or comes back into range. She checked my bloods 2 weeks later and was calling everywhere to speak to me. My levels had basically went into space. Over the course of that week I really felt as though I was getting worse, excessive swea,ts tachycardia, chronic fatigue, a horrendous tremor which looked almost parkinsonian and felt as though I was going to collapse. Well I did and became critically unwell.

Thats not to say that it happens to everyone post partum however, it may be worthwhile calling your GP or endo and asking for some advice or further bloods to be done. I felt reassured after the TS when my endo told me not to worry too much about the racing pulse as my heart was working much harder throughout the pregnancy….

I can completely sympathise with you as I was and still am (like you) desperate to get well for my kids. My endo and gyn had liased and they both agreed that my continous bleeding (for 11 weeks) post partum was most likely thyroid related.

I was like you really emotional – especially after the TS and I can honestly say that this forum was my life line and it was the people on here who really helped me through it. I felt suicidal and as though I was ready to snap. If I can get through so can you – just hang in there and as I have said before on here let us carry you through the bad days and rejoice in your good days.

    Hi all,

I was diagnosed wth Graves 15 years ago, took Tapazole for 2 years and have been in "remission" (well, have had normal TFTs) ever since. I just had my first baby 5 months ago and started noticing around 3 months postpartum that the same symptoms I had when diagnosed with GD 15 years ago had returned (heat intolerance, sweating, severe fatigue, heart racing, headaches, anxiety, tingling arms and legs, short temper, inability to focus, weight loss. etc, etc). So, 2 weeks ago I went to my family doc who ran a TSH, T3 and T4. TSH came back low (0.22), T4 and T3 both normal. He told me to come back in a month to redraw the labs but truth be told, I think my symptoms are getting worse and want to get your advice on whether I should call him now to address these symptoms or just hang in there and wait. The symptoms are bothersome but not intolerable although worsening as the days go by.

I’ve done a lot of searching online for more information on postpartum thyroiditis and graves disease but cannot get a good handle on any of the information out there. Does anyone have a similar tale? Or at least can lead me in the right direction? I feel like I understand this disease pretty well as I’ve had experience with it in the past but despite my knowledge I’m starting to feel a little out of control emotionally (which is probably related to the damned disease) and a little anxious about a recurrence. Most of all, I would like to get back to feeling well for the sake of my darling baby.

    Thank you for your advice.

Thank you so much for your reply. I think i better call my doctor to speed the process up a bit. I don’t think he’s fully aware of my history and therefore not able to make a sound decision as to how to proceed. Best of luck to you and thanks so much for sharing your story. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one out here.

Congrats on baby and welcome here.
Yes please call your dr. and explain that you were Graves’ before and that you know how you feel and you need to be treated with Tap since you did so well on it before.
Are you nursing? If so please speak with dr. about nursing and taking Tapazole, they might recommend PTU or not. I’m so not sure at this point but make sure you tell him if you are nursing or not.
He should take what you say seriously because well he should AND because you have a new baby. You can’t be feeling crappy and thinking it’s due to being a mommy. You know what you feel like and he needs to put you on what you wish. PERIOD!

Keep us up to take. prayers and pinching baby cheeks for the little one!!!
