I am guessing that you are going to the hospital to take radioactive iodine? You didn’t say. I don’t remember anyone telling me that I would lose my sense of taste and I didn’t. I was allowed to eat whatever I wanted to as well. The doctor’s did tell me drink a lot of fluid and suck on candy or chew gum to make sure the radiation didn’t settle in my salivary glands.

I don’t know why your Mom is asking you to eat salads so much. If she is concerned about your weight that may be it. I would let her know that you need more than that if you’re still hungry. Your weight isn’t as important as your overall health at this point. If you eat the best that you can you can worry about your weight when you are much older and your thyroid issues are under control. A lot of us with Graves deal with weight but we aren’t all teenagers. Good overall nutrition is what I try to stress with my 15 year old daughter.

Good luck with your procedure. I hope it will go well for you.

I wish I could give you a hug and make you feel better! Welcome here!
I’m sorry you are not well, please know that your mom is doing everything she can to help you and she will fight for what she feels is the right treatment for you.
Don’t be afraid to post how you feel, knowing your mom is here might make you uncomfortable but sometimes when you feel like screaming and you don’t think she’ll understand if you post it she’ll read it instead of you screaming it out and getting into trouble.

It is hard to be a teenage girl in this day and age. Boys stink and parents don’t understand a darn thing. Been there done that and survived through it to say when your mom says she’s been there TRUST ME! she means shes been there and is trying to help you not make the same mistakes.

You take all of that and then add that you have Graves’ to it and it just straight out stinks real bad! You feel no one understands and you have all of these emotions that you have no clue what to do and you have no idea if its just your body/hormones or if it’s this disease and you want to crawl under a rock and wish it all never happened.

Whether you are going in for an uptake scan or going in for the real RAI, remember that your parents love you and we are all here for you and will be here when its done if you have questions.
Remember that your friends and you are still only teenagers so although you have Graves and it can be serious they might not know how to respond to this and may joke about it. Sometimes joking is so much better than crying over it so take it for what it is if you hear something. Personally my mom always thought something was "wrong" with me as a kid/teenager but blood work didn’t prove it. As I got older I found out I had graves and my husband and I joked about it and I continue to joke about it because that is how I get through it. Everyone is different and you will find what works for you.

You will do just fine and you have a good support system already! I don’t know about the taste because I have never had the uptake or the RAI at all.

Just wanted to say welcome and hope that you will find the answers you need here and the support to help you through this.

(((((((((((((((((((((((Jorgie Ana)))))))))))))))))))))))))

If we all hold hands, your circle of friends is HUGE !

HI Jorgie Ana,

A BIG welcome to the bulletin board.
Sorry to hear you are feeling unwell & having to go through all this GD stuff. It’s tough enough being a teenage girl without this too! Believe me I remeber how tough it was when I was a teenager (back in the time of the dinosaurs  )
My teenage daughter, Cat, has GD. She’s going into hospital on June 9th for a scan & a biopsy (that’s when they stick a needle in your neck & take out a tiny bit of thyroid – sounds gross, huh?) She needs this ‘cos she has a big lump in her thyroid, so don’t worry you probably will never need to go through that. But she knows just how you feel. Sometimes the scariest thing is waiting for the test. It can be worse than having the thing done!
I know your Mom will be with you every step of the way so don’t sweat it too much. She’ll be there when you are scared, when you are mad & when you feel like crying.
Remember too, this thing won’t last. It might seem like forever now but one day soon you’ll think ‘Hey, I feel good today!’ <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />
Take care of yourself, we are all here to support you.
Love
W x
P.S.
If you’d like to chat with someone around your own age just send me a private message & I’ll pass it on to Cat. I’m sure she’d like to hear from you.

Hi Jorgie Ana,

My name is Emily and I have Graves Disease also. I just found out I have it in March. It’s scary, isn’t it?

Catsmum is right. It’s really hard to WAIT for the tests and procedures like you’re doing now. But it’ll be over before you know it and then you’ll be closer to the day when you are feeling better.

I’d rather eat a pizza than a salad anyday! But remember that your mom is trying to help you get healthy – that’s what us moms are for. <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />

I’ll be thinking about you this week.

I’m going to try to help you feel a little better for the day coming….
Make that the day that you ask mom for a new something for yourself… Nothing big tho, but something just for you! I am sure she won’t say no. Ya know, a new diary with a huge lock, a hair clip, OR maybe just maybe a pass to get off of a punishment in the future. She will have to type it up on the computer and she signs and you sign it the day of the scan and pull that baby out when she says Jorgie Ana you’re punished! See what I mean about pass, she can’t say no to it cuz she signed it. OR even better a month of staying up a little later on friday nights… Again put on paper and sign it together and have fun with it when she says Jorgie Ana I told you to go to bed now! Pull it out and she can’t say a thing. lol

Try to smile through the rough stuff and you become a better young lady and that leads to a well rounded woman and a great mother in the future-mamabear

Don’t forget your Mom loves you and wants to hug you – even when she can’t. my daughter had surgery and was in the hospital for more than a week when she was only 3 years old. She had so many tubes in her body that we couldn’t hug her for a couple of days – but we were close to her and NEVER stopped loving her. I know you’re anxious now, but think about how much better things will be next week.

Enjoy your new coloring books.

Hi Jorgie Ana,

I’m so glad you’re visiting here ~ it’s all so complicated, it’s nice to have people who’ve been through the same thing. I’m not sure if what you’re doing is your scan/uptake or your RAI treatment ~ sounds like RAI treatment, but I can’t be completely sure ~ but you can most CERTAINLY eat afterwards! Gosh, I’m sorry you were under the impression you’d be starving! It sounds as if your doctor has recommended a low-iodine diet ahead of time, which just leaves more room in your thyroid for the RAI itself, so leads to a better likelihood of success with your treatment.

By the way, low-iodine doesn’t have to mean NO iodine. You may want to ask your Mom to revisit this subject with the doctor. I would think that those two days of isolation will be little enough fun as it is ~ if you could at least eat foods you like (finally), it’d take a little bit of the edge off. Once you’ve taken the RAI, it’s taken up as much as it can in the first 24 hours, and the low iodine diet should not be necessary. Hopefully you can at least get a reprieve for day 2…..

yeah my mom says i can get something i like after day 2. im going for the uptake scan and the next day we get results and i get to pop the pill. we r gonna have two hours to get home then its radiation time :/

i was mad cuz they changed my date to monday. the doctors got m ixed up and valley children’s said i wasn’t a patient of theirs. now i have to stay on my stinking diet for five more days. my neck hurt so we went to the hospital and the door slammed on my hand. IT HURT… then my mom almost passed out so she saw the doctor too. but i was ok.

Hi Jorgie-Ana,

So sorry they’ve changed you date – that stinks!
But I’m sure you can stick to your diet for a little while longer & remember it will be all worth it.
Cat has her biopsy on tuesday so you’ll both be recovering at the same time
Your mom sounds great, she’s really spoiling you right now. That’s her way of saying she loves you & is there for her. Remember to give her a (((((((BIG HUG))))))) to show her you appreciate it. As tough as these thigs ar they can really bring mon & daughter even closer together.
I’m off to see how Cat’s doing now, she’s revising for her A-levels (they are the exams you need to pass to get into University in the UK), so she’s a bit stressed about them & then has the biopsy stuff on top. I get amazed by how strong you teenagers are!
Take care,
we’re thinking of you.
Catsmum x
