Hi!
My name is Yuri and I’d like to introduce myself to the forum. I was diagnosed with Grave’s in ’08 when I was 24. Oddly enough, it was caught quickly because my mother, a DVM, had the suspicion that I had a thyroid issue from the all too familiar symptoms I was experiencing at the time. Within a few weeks I visited my soon to be Endo, and well, after the tests, I was diagnosed.I took beta-blockers for the first months of treatment, but after consultation with my doctor I no longer needed them. Fortunately, I had not experienced any episodes (palpatations/anxiety, etc; ) that I had since and I have gained back about thirty pounds. Although I still have my ups and downs occasionally.
About a year ago I was taken off my medications for three months as a test to see whether or not I was in remission, although unfortunately, this was not the case. I have been taking 10mg daily since. I have a blood test coming up this week and, as always, I’m curious to know how things are in that dept:)
I belong to very few online forums (all of them having to do with cinema/photography) but seeing that I’m in the long-run with this disease I figured I should join this forum, and good thing I did: within one hour of joining and perusing the topics I already think it’s worth its weight in non-iodized salt.
I’m looking forward to being part of the community and like everyone else hoping that someday we’ll find a cure for this thing.
Ciao 4 Now,
Yuri(PS: please do forgive me if this topic is not in a thread/sub-category that it should be in-hopefully soon I’ll get the hang of this forum.)
Edit: “10 Mg” should read 10 mg Methimazole.

We don’t have separate categories on this forum, although we do have one “off topic” thread for folks to discuss hobbies, vacations, etc.. I haven’t bumped that to the top in a while, so will do that shortly.
I’m not 100% clear, but I’m guessing that the 10 mg is an anti-thyroid drug like Methimazole or Tapazole? Beta blockers can provide relief from symptoms such as hand tremors, rapid heart rate, etc., but they don’t work directly on the hyperthyroidism.
That’s good news that your mom was experienced enough to recognize your symptoms and get you into see a doctor right away! Unfortunately, we hear from way too many patients who were initially diagnosed with anxiety, depression, or heart issues! Staying on top of hyperthyroidism and getting treated quickly is definitely key.
Take care!
Hello Yuri.
Welcome to the forum. I’ve been here since 2012 (on and off) when I was diagnosed with Graves. I’m supposedly on remission right now thought I’m not sure if that is the case. I just went off the Methimazole and I’m waiting to see what happens. I have opened an article in this forum to hear from everyone who has at one time or another been in remission or been told they were in remission and discontinued the Rx. I would love to read your story about the time when you went off the Rx for 3 months.
Here is the article:
