Hi, I am new here and also live in France so sorry for gatecrashing:)
I have just been diagnosed with Graves quite quickly even though felt out of sorts for years.Had blood test 30th Oct, Drs 5th Nov, echography 7th, Iodine injection to check thyroid 16th, started neomercazole 20mg 18th, and specialist on 26th. Excellent for french health service!. What is really spooky is that my daughter was diagnosed Graves in July this year and had operation in Oct. Anyway sorry to sidetrack but I would like to know if anyone suffers from heartburn as a symptom. I started off with rapid heart, palpitations and the shakes now my heart is seeming to slow down except if I do something but I now get terrible heartburn all day. Your thoughts would be helpful:DBienvenue, Noisette.
While many of us might have experienced heartburn, it is not a common symptom of the Graves/hyperthyroidism. Sometimes the stresses of being hyperthyroid can cause other problems to arise (in my case, my gall bladder went wonky). It would make sense to talk with your doctor about it to see if there is a fix to bring you some relief.
Bonjour and thanks for your quick reply. To start with I honestly thought I was having a heart attack because it was on my left side and into my arm! Now it is from my throat straight down. Throat feels like it is swollen but have no problem swallowing, just feels like I have eaten an apple and its got stuck half way down, also neck has started to get sore most evenings!
Hi,
I have had something similar, and have wondered whether the symptoms are linked to Graves, or are an independent problem. I get an ache on my left upper chest, that can radiate slightly into my arm. The location of the pain triggers all kinds of “heart attack” fears. Various testing has been done (blood tests, ECG) and my heart does not seem to be the cause of the pain. This ache was the original reason that I went to see my doctor two years ago, when I was diagnosed with Graves. When I began treatment for hyperthyroidism, the pain went away, and I thought it was dealt with. Lately the pain has come back. My doctor doesn’t have an easy answer. I am beginning to suspect that it might be related to heartburn/indigestion. As a separate (?) issue, about four years ago I went through a period where it felt like something was stuck in my throat. For example, if I would swallow something like a pill, I would spend the next 12 hours feeling like the pill was sitting in my throat, even though it wasn’t. That problem was around for a long time and definitely got better after my hyperthyroidism was treated.Thyroid disease can give us a “goiter” (technical term for “enlarged thyroid.”) That can, perhaps, cause the full throat feeling — but not the heartburn.
Hello. Welcome.
I had terrible heartburn and stomach discomfort before I was diagnosed as being allergic to Gluten (wheat) and yeast. Once I became Gluten/yeast free, I started to feel a lot better. Some times people with GD can have Celiac (Gluten allergy) and vice versa. They are both autoimmune diseases. You might want to have your Dr. test you for Celiac.

Thank you for all your replies, I will check with my Dr. next week.
Just a quick update and future reference for anyone els suffering, it was the tablets that is causing heartburn! I have been given something to take everyday to hopefully eleviate it. Does anyone actually get a sore neck? Mine aches a lot especially if doing too much and feels like someone strangling me. ( my husband wishes!!!)
Hello – Hopefully, you will get some additional responses, but I would mention this to your doctor as soon as possible. There are certain types of inflammation in the thyroid (thyroiditis) that can potentially cause pain.
Also, if you ever find that this issue is impacting breathing or swallowing, definitely get that checked out *immediately*.
Hope that you get some relief soon!
Hi, I did mention it to her yesterday but didn’t seem overly concerned. It seems worse in the evening. It is not extremely painful mainly uncomfortable with a dull ache. Having bloods done tomorrow so hopefully will show up if anything amiss.
Hi Noisette,
When you mention a dull ache in the left chest and radiating down your left arm, I know exactly what you mean! Mine used to feel tender and irritated in my heart region but now has subsided into an ache. It feels better with vigorous exercise, as if getting more blood to that area eases it. I also mentioned it to my doc and there was no concern.
I have to wonder if there is residual damage to muscles, and the heart is a muscle. I know that my diaphram was affected when I had that muscle loss in the beginning. When I swing towards hyper, my chest symptoms reappear, also the weird hiccup/burp sound I get that is so charming.
I guess we just slog through this all and hope to stay balanced in thyroid hormone for longer periods of time. It sure is a journey!
Cheers, Mary@Maryl – Thanks for sharing your experience!
That’s good that you had the pain checked out by your doctor, as pain that radiates down one arm can potentially be a sign of a heart attack. Here is some more info from the National Institutes of Health:
