Just wondering if any of you get heart palpitations? Just feels like your heart is beating really hard?
I’ve noticed mine happen after eating, so I’ve begun a journal of everything I put in my mouth and how I feel everyday.
If you do get them have you correlated something that causes them?
Thanks!!
Yep…if you are Graves or hyper this is a definite symptom. The thyroid regulates your heart and if too many hormones are flooding your system then it could increase our heart rate. I was shocked how high mine got before I was put on the beta blocker.
Check at other times throughout the day…it’s probably high more frequently than you recognize. One reason you may notice it after eating is because your body begins to metabolize the food you ate and it’s natural for your heart rate to increase (slightly) during normal digestion.
Make sure your doctor knows this. I bought an inexpensive blood pressure machine at pharmacy to check mine. I was also shocked how high my blood pressure was considering its never been high in my entire 50+ years.
Best,
KarenYes. Mine are worst at night probably because I am more aware of them. This week, they have decreased a little each day and today, I can only feel them if I pay attention. My bp and pulse have come down this week, and I reduced the bets blocker to 25 mg because I was getting cold and my bp was getting pretty low.
(Did you ever get my pm?)
I should have mentioned I am no longer hyper. After RAI I had no palpitations. But since starting up the hormone replacement the have started up again. The last time I had bloodwork my TSH was 3.35.
I will check my pm’s..
I think I have read that palps are common with hypo too.
Hello – Heart palps are a much more common complaint with hypER, but I’ve heard of a few patients experiencing this with hypO as well. It’s definitely worth mentioning this symptom to your doctor.
MSG is a big trigger for me, and also excessive amounts of sugar. Since you’ve noticed the issue after eating, the food journal will hopefully help you identify any personal triggers.
Take care!
There are all sorts of things that cause me to have heart palpitations. Even before I was diagnosed with Graves’, I had them periodically.
I went to a couple of different Cardiologists and had stress tests, Ecko-cardiograms, EKG’s, etc. and what they found is a leaky valve. He said it’s pretty common to find these in a lot of people and not to worry. I was also diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse.
He said to try to get enough rest and lay off the stress (yeah right) but being hyper is like constant palpitations for me. And maybe being over-tired, angry, some people claim caffeine, personally I eat all the cholocate I want, they never are the cause of it.
So Beta blockers are the drug of choice. I only use them when the Graves’ kicks up and I’m hyperthyroid. Never had them when going hyp0.
If you really want something technical to read (or to help put you to sleep), the American Heart Association Journal has an interesting article regarding thyroid and the heart. Both hyper and hypo cause heart symptoms. One of the things it mentions is that there is a higher incidence of mitral valve prolapse with auto-immune thyroid disorders (both hyper & hypo).
