This summer I had RAI to kill off my thyorid. After having to wait 3 months to take any meds I have finally been on 88mcg of levothyroxine for 2 months now. My hair has been falling out since I have taken it and it seems to be getting worse. I called my endo today and he says it has nothing to do with my thyroid. Everything that I have read said it could be the meds or from being hyper or hypo. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks for all of the help!

Hi (replying under a new account as Facebook won’t let me log in :P )

I really dislike it when doctors say that what we’re dealing with isn’t thyroid related. Boo hiss to that. Of course it has nothing to do with your thyroid! You don’t have one! Hee hee! – But, I would say that it could very well have something to do with the levothyroxine. I’m on 112 mcg. of Synthroid and yes, I’ve lost A LOT of hair. Actually I’ve lost a lot of hair since starting methimazole initially and then the Synthroid. I’ve been on Synthroid 6 months now, and it has gotten a little bit better. I don’t pull out quite so much hair in the shower or through out the day, but my hair has thinned. It doesn’t look like it much to the average person, but I notice it.

When we are hypothyroid, we lose more hair than normal. When we swing from hyper to hypo to (hopefully) more normal, we lose hair, as well. It does normalize over time. It may have nothing to do with the dose of replacement hormone you are on. The only thing to do is be patient, wait until your next set of blood tests, and then see what the results are.

Hello – Hopefully, you will see some relief as things stabilize, but just a quick note to make sure that your doc is basing dosing decisions on Free T4 (some docs also look at T3) and *not* just TSH. TSH can remain suppressed early on in the treatment process, so it’s not the best benchmark for deciding when to start replacement hormone or how to adjust dosage.

    Take care!

Thanks for all of the input. My mom and sister are both hypothyroid so I asked them about hair loss and neither of them have quite the issues that I have. The only tests I hve had since RAI was for TSH. The first results 3 months after RAI was 89.7 and the last one 6 weeks later was down to 3.14.

Hello – Wow, looks like you had a major swing from hypER to hypO and then back down in a fairly short period of time…that could definitely account for the hair loss! Hopefully, you will see some relief now that your levels are starting to stabilize.

    Take care!
