    Hello All,
Haven’t been here in a while. Definitely have been feeling better.
I had rai in August of last year. Had 3 surgeries in 30 days between nov 21 and dec 21st as well. Orbital decompression on both eyes and a TT.
    My question is this…
My hair is falling out. Way more than normal. I can’t take a shower with out it stopping up the drain and a brush full every time I brush my hair? Anyone else experienced this!
Also, have bad muscle and joint stiffness. This really didnt appear until after surgeries and I started my TRH. I have been taking some calcium/magnesium/zinc supplements. They help but the stiffness is still there.
Again, has anyone else experienced this…

Causes and some suggestions would be great. My levels were with in normal range end of January. Had tests done again today and will see endo April 8th.

    Thanks!
    Shelly

    Hi Shelly,
i’ve definitely had hair loss, same thing brush is full and even when i run my hands through i get a bunch of hair!
also have a lot of joint stiffness, if i sit too long at work, oh my goodness, you would think i was 90 years old!
i find my muscles go very weak though, at my worst, i couldn’t bend down to pick something off floor or i wouldn’t be able to stand up again or couldn’t even stand on a chair to reach something.

i had rai Jan 3, 2013 and still waiting for thyroid to die. hoping my hair will start to grow back when normal range, very thin on top in the front.a

    best wishes on getting better.

I feel your pain Shelly. Literally!!
I’ve had each of those symptoms twice, first separately and then together. Muscle & joint pain when my calcium levels were very low and I’d just had my TT, rapid hair fallout when I was on ATDs, and both when I recently went hypo. Lab work revealed the cause (and fix) of my muscle/joint issues both times, so hopefully you’ll get your answer quickly!

The hair fallout is probably trickier. There is so much that can cause that. Being hyper, being hypo, beginning thyroid replacement (the Synthroid site states that some may experience thinning hair during the first few months of treatments, but that it should resolve on its own once the patient has adjusted to the med), fluctuating hormone levels – even when they’re moving from bad to good! And the list goes on from there. The good news is that I’ve seen many people say that the fallout stops short of balding and that it eventually stops altogether most of the time once the root cause is addressed. I think until our thyroid levels are normal and stable for period of time, that a lot of this can be attributed to that.

There’s a great video on the Graves’ Foundation Facebook page. It’s from the Graves’ conference and I recall the female speaker addressing ways to deal with some of the hair issues we may experience. Maybe Kimberly or Shirley or someone else knows which one I’m speaking of? Had several great suggestions that you may find helpful. Actually, I’ve seen 2 videos. One from that doc at the conference and one from a cosmetologist. If you get the time & have a FB account, you may want to explore that page. Lots of interesting stuff.

    Hope you feel better soon!

I have been experiencing hair loss as well; I actually recently just chopped my hair off because of how bad it was getting. I would speak to your doctor about adding a multivitamin into your diet that contains Biotin; or even taken Biotin alone. Another great way to combat hair loss is to drink tons of water. The more hydrated you are the more hydrated your body is. I’ve seen some improvements since I’ve stuck to a strictly water and tea diet (in terms of fluids). It was hard at first but I weeded out juice and soda consecutively each month. For example: In January for one week I drank nothing but water and tea; in February it increased to two; March three weeks; and April will be four weeks.

Thanks for the replies. Makes me feel better to know I’m not crazy or imagining things. I really believe it’s still all related the thyroid. I hope to have some resolution before my next set of surgeries this summer.
Will be under going eye muscle surgery and for my eye lid retraction.
