Myself I wouldn’t get it – it’s too untested IMO.

I am currently recovering from H1N1, and am on Methimazole which is similar to tapazole. While yes it was a bad flu and it did turn into lung issues for me {but everything does with me} it really wasn’t as bad as some regular flu bugs I’ve had. The fever was the worst mostly with it hitting 104.5 for a few hours. Lots of rest, fluids, and antibiotics to ward off lung issues and no major problems.

If he does get it – take it easy! It is very easy to over-do it when recovering.

FWIW my just turned 3 year old also caught it and it was about the same for her.

    Hi everyone,
my son is 17 years old, was diagnosed with Grave’s 2 years ago, has been taking Tapazole since that time, came to 10 mg, relapsed, started all over and now he is taking 25 mg, doing ok.
My big fear now is H1N1 outbrake, as Tapazole suppresses immune system.
What do you think about vaccination against H1N1?
    Is it desirable or opposite?

    Lara,

My 13 y/o grandson, (who does not have Graves’) just got over H1N1. His doctor advised NOT getting the vaccine. That may have been because he should have a resistance to it now, I think. This is definately a question for your doctor. You can also contact the Center for Disease Control.

    Take care,

I agree with Nancy that this is most definitely a question your doctor should answer for you. I will add, however, a bit of my history. I have asthma issues and get the flu shot every year. The year I was on PTU (same immunosuppressive possibilities as Tapazole/etc.) my doctor gave me the flu shot, but divided it into two shots. Whether that made a whit of difference, I have no idea. But that was her solution.

    Thank you so much,
I will ask the doctors, of course. I am just afraid this time they will go with general offiicial line and will recomend to vaccinate everyone. Sometimes they are on the different pages too, and give quite controversial orders, I mean his GP and his endo.Usually I am listening to what endocrinologist says. And they both so inaccessible most of the time, its our canadian reality <img decoding=” title=”Sad” />
I will try not to overreact . Thanks again.

When I went to my doctor a week ago, he suggested that I get the H1N1 vaccine, but not because my diagnosis of Graves’ disease months ago. He said I was more succeptible because I’m a 16 year-old in high school than I’m a patient taking Tapazole. I think if the school in your area has had reports of many cases, then go for it, but not just because of Graves.

The regular flu shot [aha, ‘regular’ flu] always helps, but I don’t think you need to rush out for the H1N1. My high school has it floating around, so I might’ve already been hit by it, and the worst I went through was a 103 fever and a super fast heartbeat despite sitting in the waiting room for an hour.

I was wondering if I should get the H1N1 vac or talk to my doctor about it too? I am worried because lately I seem to get all kinds of flu bugs going around and get hit harder than I used to with everything going to my lungs. I work in urban elementary schools with lots of sick kids!

I have not heard a definitive answer on this, but one other issue to consider is whether or not the vaccine is "live". I take Methimazole, and have been told to avoid all "live" vaccines *and* to avoid contact with anyone who has had a live vaccine, due to the risk of getting that particular virus.

I have been told the same and have Dr’s order for my daughter to not receive any live virus vaccines as well due to risk to me.

Luckily we already had a religious exemption for her but it’s nice to have Dr’s order to back it up.

I got my flu shot two weeks ago. I will get the HiN1 shot as soon as I can.

I am a big advocate of vacinations. They saved my life. I had three polio vacinations when I was a kid. I got caught in the polio epidemic of 1959. Because I had the vacinations I got better. I was paralyzed from the waist down for over a year and took a long time to get back to normal.

Had I not had the shots I know I would still be paralyzed to this day. All the other kids on my street caught Polio except for my brothers and sister. They too were vacinated. All the kids who were not never regained movement from polio.

Yes Indeed I will take my shot as soon as it is available.
