I have been on tapazole (for the 2nd time) since November, and my numbers are coming into range. I have been struggling with eye problems, as I’ve described a few times on this board. What I haven’t mentioned much are the emotional issues I’ve had over the past few years. Recently they’ve been pretty bad. I know for at least two years, I’ve had problems (actually some days it’s impossible…) controlling my anger at every little thing. I also have days where I just feel wave after wave of overwhelming depression.

I have seen a psychologist for years, and he says that it’s hard to work on this when my thyroid is out of whack. He says I shouldn’t stop trying, but that it is a daunting task.

The thing is, I’m not in a raging period of hyperthyroidism right now, but I still have the worst anger and depression I’ve ever felt in my life. I’m wondering – can the actual Graves antibodies cause this to happen, as opposed to the thyroid hormones which are supposedly now fairly well controlled? Has there been any research on this?

Several posters have recently said they have felt like they’re going crazy. I certainly can identify with that. I guess I just want to know if "Graves" is really a separate entity from "hyperthyroidism." I don’t even know if this really makes any sense. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Kaicee …. Graves disease (immune system deficiency) is the cause and Hyperthyroid is a symptom of the Graves.

As far as the raging goes, in previous years when Graves was less known of, Graves Disease was mis-diagnosed for Bipolar! They have very similar symptoms, especially the highs/lows and the raging. My family accused me of geing bipolar for years. I finally went to a psychiatrist and to my amazement he told me that I absolutely was NOT bipolar! It was not long after that that I was diagnosed with Graves! Did your Doc put you on an antidepessant? If not, you may want to discuss it with you doctor. It really helps.

    I hope this helps!
