After 13 months on decreasing levels of Tapazole, my Endo thinks I may be in the
30% of GD patients in which the disease goes away. I get f/u bloodwork in 2 weeks & overall, I feel much better, (since the Tapazole was making me hypo). Has anyone out there experienced a temporary GD, which dissipated & then recurred at a later time??
I’m freaking over the possibility of destroying my thyroid through RAI, then waiting for the hypo symptoms & going through a metabolic rollercoaster until the dosage of Synthroid is regulated. Is that the way it usually happens?
    Thanks. Bean

    Dear Bean,

I am confused…so you have successfully taken the meds, that is great,
not everyone can,but they often wished they could, and you doctor
fells you might be in remission (REAL REMISSION DOES HAPPEN)
and you are worrying about RAI and the future…
ever heard that old word…Don’t borrow trouble from tomorrow…
I mean REJOICE…you are in good shape.
In Europe and Japan, if you did relapse they would offer another
course of antithyroid drugs. They have even higher remission rates.
And by the way, I have read alot of articles out of recent US MED Journals
example New England Journal of Medicine..and the remission rate in US
is more like 50 to 55%. But hey, even if it was only 30%, if you are
    there, then you are there.
There is a funny paradox in this GD stuff. It is really important for
us to be fully educated about the condition and the treatment
options ( easier said than done, too) but then worry and fear are
counter-productive. There are future unknowns with this stuff…
will our eyes get worse, will the imperfect treatments cause other
problems, etc. But it is really important for us to be able to relax and
not cross bridges until we come to them. Hope you get all the info you
need to feel confident in your treatment choices, and most of all
I hope that you are in remission, or at least well on your way.
