Yes, most definitely, some people gain weight with hyperthyroidism. And then they lose it when they are stabilized back at normal levels of hormone.

Weight is a very complicated issue when it comes to hyperthyroidism, and I would strongly urge you to focus on getting your thyroid levels stabilized in the normal range (and this includes the TSH), rather than worrying about weight. For an example of the complexity, some of the weight we lose while hyperthyroid comes from the loss of muscle mass — especially the large muscles of the legs, upper arms, and chest. This is HORRIBLE weight loss because it LOWERS our metabolism, in addition to making us weaker (so that our stamina goes down and we cannot “do” as much, stay as active as we would like). Muscle, even at rest, burns more calories than do other tissues. So, if you have lost muscle, and are doing less, but are still eating your normal amount, you might experience weight gain. When our thyroid hormone levels are normalized, stabilized in the normal zone, muscle starts to return (yes, we see weight gain when that happens). But this is GOOD weight gain. I regained 15 pounds and did not change dress size.

Anyway, the only healthy way to approach these difficult days is to focus on health, and a healthy diet, and to ignore temporary fluctuations in weight.

I was diagnosed with Graves back in April. Have been on PTU since then (so 5 months); a does of about 100 mg a day. From what I read here, and what my doctor says, that’s a really low dose – and it seems to bring my thyroid levels down (to high normal), just not my TSH.

I started gaining weight before I started the PTU – And have continued to gain. I work out 5 days a week – and watch what I eat!! I thought you were supposed to lose weight when hyperthyroid???! As I stated before, my thyroid level is still in the higher range of normal.

When I questioned my doctor she informed me that there is a small percentage of people that actually gain weight with Graves. That my increasing my PTU (to 150 mg/day) might actually help me lose weight, and keep my thyroid within normal levels.

Has anyone ever heard of Graves causing weight gain? I do NOT want to gain any more! Please help!

    Thanks,
    Gina

Thank you for the information. My doctor doesn’t seem too concerned with my TSH levels; actually I think I am more concerned! It’s really hard to ignore my weight gain – none of my clothes fit any more. For the last 2 months I’ve been in the “normal range” (again, not TSH), but my doctor continues to suggest trying something more, less or just different. I’m to the point I just want surgery!

Again, thanks for your help. . .
