Wish I had the specifics for you but I have this too. My RAI was 3/16. My Endo told me there’d be an increased risk for RAI with Graves but at the time I wasn’t having any problems. In my case it seems to make my eyelids puffy and on a bad day with pressure my left eye sticks out a little more. On most days it’s not noticable though. I have an appt to get it checked out in July. Until then I just sleep with my head propped up to help with the swelling. I’ve also heard hot/cold compresses help but I haven’t used them yet.
Somewhere on the web I read the first 3 months you’re more likely to have problems. But I have also heard several other horror stories. For now I try to keep it positive. Not think about it much and do what I can with my makeup. The puffy eyelids usually go away by 9am or so. Hang in there! ” title=”Smile” />hhhmmm… and all this time I thought I had just developed a new allergy to my cat, maybe there’s more to this ” title=”Confused” /> I’m a bit blond sometimes and don’t always connect the dots. Nobody ever said anything to me about puffiness. They didn’t mention bulging which is only slightly the case. but there is a distinct difference in bulging and puffy
Hi everyone..question for you..I had RAI on 2/25, am officially hypo, started on 75 mcg of Synthroid on 5/21. I have had a complete eye exam by a neuro-opthomalogist (She has been my eye doc for years, who happens to be one of the best in town). Other then alot of puffiness around my eyes, my eyes are fine (so far).
Can someone help me understand where the puffiness comes from? is it from the thryoid changes/instability? is it a post side effect of the RAI? does it usually go away when the thryoid stabilizes on synthroid?
Hoping that someone on this forum who has experienced the eye puffiness, or who understands the process, can explain why it happens and if it ever goes away. It doesn’t "hurt" but my eyes definitely feel tired. Thanks so much for all the helpful info I get from this site! There can be some connection with hypothyroid levels and puffiness around the eyes, which is not exactly thyroid eye disease, and sometimes does resolve when levels are normal and stable. There is also some puffiness that CAN be caused by thyroid eye disease (pretty rare), but if you’ve had an examination by a neuro-ophthalmologist, they should be able to say conclusively whether your puffiness is caused by TED.
Hi:
I had severe puffiness of my eyes when I was in the "height" of my graves disease. My eye lid (top and bottom) were VERY puffy in the mornings. The upper eyelid and the lower one had severe swelling where you could not even see that little part in the corners closest to the bridge of your nose. My endocrinologist said on my reports "periorbital congestion and conjunctiva injection" . It would be the worst in the morning upon wakening and then as the day went on, it would subside. This swelling went on until I had the RAI and my levels started coming down. My levels were extremely high, and they are now still high, but not nearly what they were in January. I do not have any swelling anymore and actually could see it getting better as my test results showed my numbers coming down. I hope this helps, I was soooo afraid of having TED, but only had some minor acheing in my eyes upon moving them, but as of today, not protruding or anything like that. I will say that my endo recommended using night time eye gel to keep them lubricated, but I did not feel that this helped at all….How could I forget? You reminded me (it was so long ago) ~ the first symptom that sent me to the doctor was puffiness around my eyes, which continued until I was no longer hyperthyroid, and was not TED. It’s tough to know exactly what’s going on without an exam by a good ophthalmologist who knows about TED.
