A second opinion is an excellent idea. There are those of who do have both Graves’ and Hashimoto’s. Tests can determine if you have both diseases. It does make diagnosis and treatment a bit harder. Use our search engine on Graves’ and Hashimotos. I know it has been addressed in the past.

On-line FacilitorHi Everyone–
I’m new to posting but have been reading this board for a couple of months now. Thought I had things all figured out, but…
Thought I had GD. Hyper symptoms, blood tests concurred. My Nurse Practitioner put me on Tapazole– too much, I thought (60 mg/day). Then had severe hypo symptoms and blood test to match (TSH 150+) and got put on Synthroid. Finally got fed up and went to see an Endo, who told me (by looking at my past tests, listening to a list of my symptoms– did no testing himself) that I have Hashimoto’s! Well, that was not what I expected to hear! I was so convinced I knew what my problem was that I’m having touble believing he’s correct. I sent him a fax asking for further explanation, but havent’ heard back yet.
Wonder if anyone has had this kind of experience and also wonder what I should do– trust his diagnosis? Ask to see another Endo? How can it be Hashimoto’s, which I understand to be characterized by solely hypo symptoms and tests, when I was originally hyper?
Anyone have any input?
Thanks so much–
Leslie
Hi Lester,
When I was first being diagnosed with GD there was a question whether it was Graves or Hashimoto’s. Apparently a few people can present with hyper symptoms at the beginning stages of Hashimoto’s (kinda like a motor that runs too hot before it burns up!) The subsequent antibody and RAI uptake tests interpreted by the endocrinologist helped make the final diagnosis for me. I would say keep pursuing your questions with the endo—they are the experts!
I believe the definitive test for Hashimoto’s is the blood test for the antibodies — I’m not sure what they’re called (other than Hashimoto’s antibodies…), but your endo will certainly know which tests to order to look for Graves’ and Hashimoto’s antibodies.
