Has anyone else heard about the new study for thyroid eye disease from the American thyroid Assoc? Just read this and I am going to try it and see if I get any relief from the side effects of this disease.

    Worth a shot.

Jules, Thanks for the article! I am going to try eating Selenium rich foods.

Here’s a list of foods containing Slenium that I’ve found.
    10 Selenium Food Sources

    1. Brazil Nuts
    2. Sunflower Seeds
    3. Fish (tuna, halibut, sardines, flounder, salmon)
    4. Shellfish (oysters, mussels, shrimp, clams, scallops)
    5. Meat (Beef, liver, lamb, pork)
    6. Poultry (chicken, turkey)
    7. Eggs
    8. Mushrooms (button, crimini, shiitake)
    9. Grains (wheat germ, barley, brown rice, oats)
    10. Onions

This data does come from a reputable source, although the study was fairly small.

Also, please take note of the warning in the article that there is a recommended upper limit for the daily intake of Selenium. This fact sheet from the National Institutes of Health actually recommends a *lower* maximum recommended daily dose than what is mentioned in the article: http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/selenium/

Would anyone be so kind as to help a math-impaired TED sufferer understand how many Brazil nuts I can/should eat each day? I bought a half pound today at Fresh Market for $5.50 and they were surprisingly tasty. I ate 5-6 nuts but have no idea how much selenium that is…

Hello – I don’t know what the value is per nut, but the fact sheet says that 1 ounce of Brazil nuts is 544 micrograms of Selenium. The upper recommended limit is 400 micrograms. So you would probably want to stick to something less than 1 ounce on a daily basis. So you would want to stick to less than 3/4 of an ounce per day, assuming you aren’t getting other sources of Selenium.

I was told that 2 Brazil nuts would on avg give 150-250 of Selenium. So I eat 2 Brazil Nuts daily. I have for 3 months now. No regrets! I’ve only seen improvement and it was from day 1. I’m not the only one that has experienced this.
