Hello everyone. It’s been a while since I’ve posted but I wanted to update on what has happened to me since my RAI treatment in July of 2009. I’ve had the usual up and downs with my levels until my awesome thyroid doctor got my levels under control with Synthyroid .112 There was a slight problem with other issues that I didn’t quite prepare for. Ever since I got the RAI treatment done I didn’t have a period for 7 months. I went to my gyno and eventually birth control pills did the trick and gave me my period. Problem is, is that the only way I could get a period was on the birth control pills. To make a long story short, they diagnosed me with Premature Ovarian Failure. I have read things on the internet of this happening in women who have gotten the RAI treatment done but to women who are closer to menopause (I’m 36). Of course I am not saying that it was a total result of it because I’ve also read that having an autoimmune disease PERIOD can cause problems with the ovaries. My gyno didn’t COME OUT and say it but I believe it had A LOT to do with the ovarian failure. I started going thru early menopause and my gyno put me back on the BC pills after we found out how low my estrogen level was. She said she wants me on them until I’m around 50 or so. She also said that I DO NOT have to take the pills every month. I can skip a month if I want to see if my body will ovulate by itself, but, everytime I’ve tried that, it doesn’t work. It’s a little sad and depressing but my husband and I never really planned to have children anyway. I will NEVER REGRET my decision of the RAI and even though I had this happen to me, I would DO IT AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT!! I was soooo miserable and did not want to end up like my grandmother. She died at 64 from heart disease caused by Graves Disease.
I just wanted to share and update you on what has happened to me and hope it will help someone else who may REALLY want kids.
Hope everyone is feeling well!
StacyHi Stacy, thank you so much for sharing your very interesting history! I am so glad you have a great endo, and are euthyroid.
Also, that you are getting good care and attention by your gyno.It was so nice of you to write, tell us how you are getting along with Graves’. Probably, sooner or later, your post will be very helpful to someone.
