My sons labs have finally come back normal. I asked his Endo if he could write a few more specifics on his 504 forms for next year. His papers for school were lacking detail on Graves symptoms. I was told no because if his labs are normal then any issues he has at school in the future is just his bad habits and cannot be Graves related. It was my understanding that it could take up to 1 year for kiddos to regain cognitive function and feel better. Any thoughts?

Hello and welcome! I don’t have any solid research to give you, but from the patients the GDATF has had contact with, symptoms can certainly linger for a while after levels become stabilized. This is especially true if it took a while to get an initial diagnosis and get started on treatment. One of our facilitators, Bobbi, likens this to a hurricane. Once the hurricane blows through, the actual storm has passed – but it still takes time to repair all the damage.

Getting a second opinion might be one option. You can find several referral sites in the “Looking for a Doctor?” thread in the announcements section of this forum.

Also, there is a Facebook group for parents of Graves’ kids, so you might be interested in posting this question in that group. It’s not an official group moderated or controlled by the Graves’ Disease and Thyroid Foundation, but it includes many family members who have come together to share their personal experiences. They are located at http://www.facebook.com/groups/265484340175004/.

It’s a closed group, but you can request to join, and the organizers will approve you if you let them know that your son has Graves’.

Wishing you and your son all the best!

Randistuart, I just asked me endo about a related issue because I’m still having working memory issues. I try to remember to do something and forget about a few seconds later sometimes. She said she has seen people have lingering mental and other effects even up to a year after getting off all medication. So it’s entirely possible your son might need a little leeway.

    Hi Randistuart,
You got some great suggestions. I sure understand your concern. I suggest you request your endo to write (I know they are super busy) a separate letter stating that the symptoms are still present.
I am guessing you do not want to lose the 504 status, and also have the help in the specific areas that will help your son have a better year, and get the support he needs. But I know you need to document it. I guess the other option is to have some of the evaluative tests and assessments that are the school needs for documentation.

Keep us posted. The website Kimberly mentioned should be VERY helpful for you, too.
