About 12 weeks after I took the RAI, my thyroid level went to nothing! I spent 3 days in bed becuase I could not walk due to joint pain (especially in the hips and knees). Ever since then, if I get stresed out or it’s going to rain, I feel it in my hips so I know what you’re talking about.
I don’t know how to solve it. Wish I could give you some help in relieving the painHi Wendy/Ruby,
Have you been checked for arthritis? Seems many who have graves’ disease also develop this particular affliction. I know Jake has developed this since being diagnosed.Hope this helps.
Regards,
JAN, NGDFIs joint pain a typical symptom of Graves? 9 years post RAI, still have eye problems/headaches and sometimes joint pain – hip, ankle, spine, shoulder blades. I don’t see any postings on others with joint pain – maybe it’s unrelated?
I wish you were kidding. Arthritis runs in my family and now I may be at greater risk due to Graves?! What else can happen?

I’ve recently started PTU and I have strange pains in my knuckles. The doctor says it’s unlikely to be the PTU, and more likely to be the Graves’ disease itself. This isn’t what I’ve read–I see joint pain listed as a side effect of PTU, but never of Graves’! Anyway, if he’s wrong and it is the PTU, is it dangerous or irreversible? I’m willing to put up with almost any side effects rather than have some other treatment that involves weaning my baby. Thanks. –Abigail (computer troubles make me unable to read what I’ve typed before sending, so excuse typos and incoherence!)
Hi JenB,
While some people do experience joint pain with Graves’, it’s really not one of the “classic symptoms” for the most part. If your thyroid hormone tests came back in the normal range, there’s a good chance your problem is caused by something else. It would be interesting to get new thyroid levels done, though, so you could compare the two to see if anything’s changed. If the T4 has risen and the TSH has fallen, it might be something to discuss with the doctor, even if your levels still fall within the normal range. Good luck to you in finding the correct diagnosis!
