I was wondering if Graves disease can cause acne? Over the past month I have started to develop acne. I have not had skin issues since my early twenties. If so, will it go away once I am regulated?
Thanks!
SusanAs far as I know, Graves’ doesn’t cause acne, but odd things can happen from any hormonal imbalance ~ I don’t really know much about acne specifically, and I don’t recall it being mentioned during the conferences. I also didn’t have much of a problem with acne, but it did return when I was approaching perimenopause, so maybe that’s something else to look at. Have you spoken with a dermatologist?
I was able to find information on acne being associated with hyperthyroid. I will hope it’s that and not early menopause. ” title=”Smile” /> I made an appt with my dermatologist none the less.
Thanks! I’ll let you know what the doctor says. ” title=”Smile” />
Hi,
I did experience acne about a month after I was diagnosed with Graves. I have never had bad skin so when I had the break out i was wondering what the problem was. It did clear up over time.

Thanks. My hope is that it will clear up now that my levels are starting to normalize. I still have it pretty bad on my back. I haven’t had this since I was a teen. Yikes!
Hi!
I definitely have had a few breakouts of acne due to Graves’ or its side effects. I found that 2.5% benzoyl peroxide (can be found in Neutrogena’s On-The-Spot Acne Treatment (vanishing cream formula)) cleared up the underlying acne and allowed my skin to heal properly. That and following the old-school rules of washing your face 2x day with a light cleanser, moisturizing after the acne treatment has been soaked up, not touching your face, etc. Hope this helps!
I definitely developed terrible acne–on my neck, where I had *never* had acne before–around the time of my diagnosis last year. They were terrible pustule-like things and they scarred, too! I felt like a leper at the time. My endocrinologist claimed that Graves doesn’t cause acne per se, so the only thing I can think is that either she was wrong or that it was the hyperthyroid stress, and I was *very* hyperthyroid initially. At any rate, I dealt with it by getting a good anti-acne toner and wiping my neck regularly, and eventually as my levels came down it went away (and so did the scars). I’m sure yours will as well, and if it’s on your back the toner should work well there too, and at least make you feel like you’re doing something about it. I know just how you feel, it’s like insult added to injury.
