I had posted last week about possible arthritis flare-up. I have
since seen my endo and he told me that Graves’ can affect the joints
but he “didn’t know what to tell me about that”. I am hobbling around like
Amos McCoy as it is affecting primarily my right knee and now also
my right hip. Although my blood test results are better, I am considering
RAI to get this over with-I know it isn’t a magic solution as I have read
all the posts since I was diagnosed. Does anyone have any info on this joint
involvement? My 72 yr. old mom was here to help me out this last
week and she got around better than I did!
Thanks for any help-Bobbi, welcome back-hope you’re improvining each day.
    Best to all,
    Linda

Linda – I was diagnosed with Graves over two years ago. It took
me about one year before my thyroid level was “back to normal.” I
too have experienced joint pain, mainly in my right hip and right
shoulder. I’m a runner, and it was painful and pretty hard to
live with. However, since my levels have become normal, the pain
has gone away. Believe it or not, I actually ran a marathon
six months ago. Don’t give up on the medication you’re taking.
I’m not sure how long you have been on it, but be patient and
give it some time. Good luck to you!!

All the posts about Graves’ affecting joints has me intrigued. I have had problems with my knees for about 15 years. Sitting in a theater or airplane seat or even in the car when I couldn’t stretch my legs out just about drove me crazy. They were more accurate at predicting the weather than the National Weather Service. At times they were so bad that I couldn’t even get out of a chair without using my arms, and they made the most interesting creaky noises. The strange thing was that they never bothered me standing or walking. I never bothered to go to a dr. to get this checked out because I just assumed it was arthritis.

Now, here is the strange part. About a month ago I realized that I was down on my haunches lining up a putt at the golf course. No problem getting up or down. It was just something that I did unconsciously. I hadn’t been able to do that in YEARS! But it did make me start wondering. I was only diagnosed with Graves’ last fall so I’m not convinced that was the earlier problem, but I can’t help but wonder now if there isn’t some connection between the meds I’m on now and my new knees! If I figure it out, I’ll let you know!

Cindy, your post really caught my interest. I was diagnosed with arthritis when I was 21. Mostly down my right side, jaw, wrist, hip and both knees. The entire five years I took ATDs my joints never hurt nor did I feel everyday type aches and pains. I’ve been off ATDs for 3 months now and my hip hurts, but for me it feels like back to normal. I know what you mean about doing something without thinking about it that you couldn’t manage previously. Hope you continue to feel well.

    Hi Joanne

YOUR posting took my attention because I noticed the pain in my right thigh disappeared some time after taking RAI. Could it be the RAI, the combination of RAI and PTU, or the end of cold winter days?? I will know for sure when i stop PTU and when the winter comes back next year.
