Hi there. I’m new to this website, and looking for some support. I was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease back in Oct. 2001, and have been on meds to bring my levels down and have success until recently. All of a sudden I started to feel very tired and didn’t want to get out of bed. It took all my strength to walk to the mailbox just recently. So I called my doctor and they brought me in for a blood test which shows that I’m now hypothryoid. They told me stop taking the meds all together for the next 4-6 weeks. I’ve been off the meds for about 6 days now, but feel very sluggish on certain days. I woke up in the middle of the night last night with pain in my back, and this morning my legs ache. One eye is closed more than the other, which I haven’t had any eye problems with this disease so far. I feel very emotional a lot of the times. It is difficult, as I have to hold down a full-time managerial position, and take care of our 4 year old. My husband is supportive, but I don’t think anyone really understands unless you have this disease. Can any of you offer me words of wisdom in maintaining my busy life style and coping with this disease? Thank you.
Hi Malex and welcome,
Wow can I ever relate. The switch from hyper to hypo can be gradual or rapid. Looks like you fell into the rapid pot. When I went hypo I felt the same way. I could not get out of my car and walk into the house until I rested at least thirty minutes.
The reason they recommended stopping all medications is if you are going hypo then continuing the meds will make you even more hypo. By the doctor telling to you to stop it gives you body time to get the meds out of your system and to see if you will start to go hyper again. Then they can tell what to do for you.
Every person is unique. There is no one size fits all with this disease. Only a doctor working with you can tell you what they recommend for you.
Things get better after treatment. And we are always here. I have been where you are. I have Graves’ and life is good.

On-line FacilitatorJust wondering were you on–TD’s like Tapazole or did you have RAI treatments? What Meds did they have you stop?.
I’m on Tapazole for 3 months now (10 mg 2x day) and feeling a little sluggish lately… thinking I may need less meds…..
thanks
