Hi, Lori–
I, too have had stomach problems, acid and pain. I’ve had Graves’ for nearly 20 years, so it’s hard for me to blame the disease for my stomach problems–after all, over time we can develop all sorts of other ailments. However, the excess acid seems to have gotten worse with the hypothyroidism post RAI. I am taking a prescription for this (Pr…c). I have a theory that the RAI or possibly the PTU I took for many years affected my parathyroid glands, causing my calcium balance to be out of whack and perhaps causing the acid stomach. Unfortunately, taking extra calcium, which I need, also can cause rebound acidity. There are also hormones made in our thyroid glands that affect stomach acidity. It is confusing. The gastroenterology journals generally don’t provide abstracts to PubMed, so I haven’t been able to follow up on this.
Hope you feel better!

Hi Lori,
No you are definately not alone with your gastrointestinal problems.
After 18mths on ATD’s and steroids I began experiencing problems with Reflux. I got off of both meds about a month ago (after 2years of taking them, and have begun to notice a decrease in acidic taste and stomach pain. I hope that you have discussed this problem with your endo, as there are meds that can really help.
Blessings,
sueJake had this and the doctor prescribed an antacid for him!
Hope this info helped!

Hi guys, am I THE ONLY PERSON to suffer from stomach problems with GD???? Does anyone else have excess acid or pain in their stomach??? Please let me know…..i am in dire need of an answer…..
thanks….
Lori,
I have them too. Don’t know if they’re thyroid related or not.
Virginia in MnLori-Stomache problems was my first sigh of Graves. I was really sick with my stomache for two years.. the drs didn’t know what was wrong with me.. I have been through many uncomfortable test trying to find out.. At first they thought I had crohns disease, then colitias. Nothing was ever found to be wrong.. After many test my dr sent me to the mayo clinic to be examined.. I went through all the test again.. seen drs for every possible thing before they found out that I have graves.. Now there isnt one dr who has said to me that my stomache problems are related but since i have been treated with the proper medication my stomache problems have gotten alot better.. they are not gone but they are better.. I also found that stress plays an important part of my stomach problems.. the more I have the more pain Im in.. so if you are asking for my personal opionion YES GRAVES AND GASTROINTESTINAL PROBLEMS GO TOGETHER…now that is only my opionion…
