Hello – It’s actually pretty common for docs to estimate a little on the low side with the first pass of replacement hormone, as they don’t want to send patients back into a hypER cycle.

As for the weight, some patients have an easy time losing the weight once they are regulated…for others, it remains a bit of a struggle. If you do a search for "weight" on this board, you can see that there are quite a few of us who have had challenges getting back to our pre-Graves’ weight!

Here are a few recommendations from a nutritionist who presented at our 2009 conference:

    1. Include breakfast daily within 2 hours of waking up.
    2. Don’t go longer than 5 hours in between meals
    3. Select “high volume” and “high fiber” foods such as fruits, veggies, and whole grains
    4. Limit servings of healthy fats to 1 per day
    5. Prioritize at LEAST 7 hours of sleep a night

Once a doctor’s clearance is obtained to engage in activity, she also recommended 150 minutes per week of physical activity, plus strength training 2 times per week.

I am not aware that the dose of thyroid replacement is related to weight at all. I believe it is based on labs and how you are feeling.
I look forward to other replies on this subject. Of course, the rest of Kimberly’s comments are right on,and very good ideas for all of us. And the rest of the US population!
Guess I will check out NGDF facebook. Haven’t done that yet.

Hi Shirley – The weight issue only comes into play when making the initial dosing estimate. After that, as you mention, all the adjustments are made based off of lab results.

Would love to see you over on FB! Here’s a link to the Foundation’s page:

So I got my labs done yesterday and my tsh was 20! Thank god because I gained six lbs! My dr is out of town so another reviewed my labs. I am starting on 100 mg of generic synthroid for two months then having labs again in two months. Im just concerned bc my dr said id prob be at 112 bc if my weight of 140. Is it normal to start dose lower than projected long term dose? Also think I will lose that extra weight?
