Hi
Well I had the night from hell last night, couldn’t sleep, restless leg so bad on top of it from 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. I can honestly say I had zero sleep last night, and had all these appointments booked for today. Don’t know how I managed to get through them but I did.
Told my doctor I felt almost manic, chest hurt, breathing difficulties, extreme insomnia, etc. and she immediately took my blood pressure and turns out I was in Stage 2 hypertension…169/96
She couldn’t believe it, gave me a prescription for a beta blocker and told me to get to the pharmacy right away and get it filled and take two tablets. I told her I felt like I was going to jump out of my own skin, and was very ill.
She explained to me that since I was only 3 weeks out of my RAI that I was prob. in a very hyperthyroid state….(ah dah) and sent me for a blood draw right away at the hospital…I go back next week to see what the results are. Not sure when I will start on medication….
Doesn’t sound good for me to head South this winter, and not looking forward to spending it here in Northern Canada, but one has to do what one has to do. She said if I went stateside for the winter, I would be paying a fortune for medical insurance, and she would want me monitored by a doctor while I was there…..(Arizona) Well don’t think that will happen.
I’m feeling somewhat better after taking the beta blocker and will stay on them until next week. My neighbour is bringing over a blood pressure cup so I can monitor my bp over the evening and tomorrow. I’m to call her if things don’t settle down.
What a nightmare this has been, bad enough to feel this way, don’t need to worry about having a stroke on top of it.

Deb,
You should probably count on staying on the beta blocker for awhile. You can’t just stop it abruptly. You can lower the dose slowly over time but since you are having such a high BP you will really need to ask your doctor about how long to stay on it and how to taper off.ewmb
So you don’t have any PTU after RAI? That would be the second time I’m reading of this protocol?
I had to have 1/2 of my pre-RAI dose of PTU for a week or two after RAI (don’t remember exactly). That was the protocol 4 years ago. Kind of makes sense to counter all that thyroid hormone dump that’s definitely going to be happening after RAI.
Hope your doctor appointment went well. RAI seems to be pretty unpredictable from person to person, but at 3 weeks I still had moments like you describe. Today, at 5 weeks and 4 days I feel perfect for the first time in months. You’ll get there. I was only taking 10 mg propranolol once in a while at night to help me sleep, and I did go off of it completely after RAI. If you take it regularly you’ll need to taper off of it slowly. I never took ATD’s, before or after the rai. Let us know how you’re feeling.
