Opticians are not the right doctor, you need an ophthalmologist. The best ones are those affiliated with the ASOPRS, the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery ~ website http://www.asoprs.org. These are ophthalmologists with special training in the treatment of TED. If none of them are affiliated with your insurance, then you may want to ask your endocrinologist or even your internal med doctor for a referral to another ophthalmologist. Opticians just deal with prescription lenses, they don’t "do" eye disease.

    Thanks,
I just looked at the list for my state and there are two that are about an hour and a half away and they are on my insurance. Now I just have to get an appointment. I may ask my endo if he can make a referral so I can get in sooner.

Does anyone know a way to search for those opthamologists who work with TED patients? I don’t know the right buzz words on some of the search things I have found. My insurance gives me 500 MDs and I can’t call all of them.

Should I start with my local optician that I see every year? He is very thorough but I don’t think he’s the right person for some things.

Usually, telling the Receptionist that you have Graves’, with eye complications, will get you in the group of patients that need to come in as soon as there is an available appointment, You can also tell them that you found their name through a referral on the Graves’ Disease Foundation’s website. Most of these doctors are doing a lot of cosmetic work right now, but their compassion for Graves’ patients runs very deep. They don’t confuse "cosmetic" with "Reconstruction". BTW, they don’t usually use initials like TED except in writing, so tell the reseptionist that you have Graves’ disease.

    Take care,
