The past week I’ve been feeling gradually hyper. Pulse a little higher than usual, feeling warmer, especially at night, feeling anxious and having palpitations. Yesterday I was feeling a little anxious so hopped on the treadmill for a half hour, which usually makes me feel better. Instead I felt worse. I had to get ready for work, but was feeling strange. An hour after I had walked on the treadmill my pulse was 116!

I grabbed a 12.5mg Atenolol (which I have only used once before months ago) in case I needed it. I put in a call to my endo’s office on the way to work. Pulse was still high at work, so I took the Atenolol. My pulse dropped down in an hour or so to normal and the anxiety went away. Was hot when I went to bed.

This morning I woke up and felt very cold and an hour later, my hands are still icy. Still haven’t heard back from the endo, hopefully soon.

Anyway, can taking a beta blocker make me feel this way? I only took the one pill. This morning my pulse is 76.

Hi Amy, I have taken beta blockers for a long time through the years and in my personal experience,, the only thing I ever felt was drowsy.

If you feel warm, (God I hate! that) and are having a problem exercising, I would say that rotten feeling is hyper happening. Believe me, I have been going through this for years. Yes, I sometimes get a cold nose, cold feet and cold hands, but the rest of me is burning up! And as my doctor explained hyperthyroidism is a feeling of continuous warmth. Well, not sure I agree with this because I have had a TSH of 0.01 and still had cold spells. So what does he know? He’s not a Graves’ patient.

Beta-blockers do cause me to get cold hands and feet, this is a listed side effect actually – the effect isn’t too noticeable for me if the room temp is warm but during the winter it’s very clear. I sure hope you aren’t getting hyper again – did you reduce your meds recently?

Hi Amy – Hopefully, the endo’s office will call you back. Here’s some info from the Mayo Clinic on Beta Blockers, and cold hands are listed as a potential side effect:

Thanks for the info on cold hands and feet! I looked up side effects when I first got the Atenolol, but forgot that one. Plus I tend to have cold hands and feet, but not lately, aside from this morning. Still haven’t heard back from the endo. Dudnt like my last endo, but at least I got a call back sooner. Heart rate is better today, but feeling jittery and have palpatations.

My PRU was cut in half on 3/14 from 100mg to 50mg since I was hypo.

I definitely feel colder with the Atenolol. I was wearing three layers today and only took 25 mg. Crazy stuff! I too, feel very tired ifi take more than 25 mg. I also read that itchy or swollen eyes can be a side effect of beta blockers….less likely and less known, but the potential is there. I don’t remember my eyes bothering me before the BB.
