I’ve been on methimazole for a few years now. T3 and t4 are “normal” but close to the lower ranges now. Tsh is normal too. For the last few weeks I’ve been experiencing fatigue, tiredness, sleepiness and weight gain. I lost interest in working out and have no energy whatsoever. Has anyone dealt with that? Does it make sense to take the methimazole and maybe some natural thyroid support pills to boost the metabolism a little? I’m so tired of that stinking disease.

Hello and welcome – Definitely talk to your doctor about your symptoms. The “normal” range is extremely wide, and some patients do find that they feel their best in a specific place within that range. It could also be helpful to get a physical done with your primary care provider just to rule out whether any other issue could be contributing to your fatigue.

Definitely avoid the temptation to use those so-called “thyroid support” supplements, as they could make it even more difficult to keep your levels regulated. Some contain ridiculously high levels of iodine, and others actually contain T3 and T4 – which is only supposed to be available by prescription! This article discusses a fairly recent study that was done by the American Thyroid Association:

Definitely be persistent with your doctors until you can get some relief – but please don’t resort to those over-the counter meds!
