Hello to all my Graves’ brothers and sisters: I had eye surgery 2 weeks ago to correct my double vision. All went well, but I might need another surgery or 2 to tune ’em up. For the past week, I have had severe headaches that come from around the right eye. Now I’m not one who gets headaches very often, maybe two or three times a year, so this does concern me a bit. When I take Tylenol, it goes away, but it always returns in 5+ hours or so. My opthamalogist(sp?) is aware of this problem.
Has anyone out there had major headaches after strabismus surgery? Am I over reacting – again!
From someone who has come from the top of the mountain, down to the bottom, then back to the top again, then down to the bottom again, then top, then bottom, up, down, up, down, up, down…GD will make a yoyo out of you every time! Thanks in advance

When I had my strabismus surgery to correct my double vision I too had headaches, I think they lasted for quite awhile so I took an anti-inflamitory IBprophen. They did stop with no problems, and GREAT visual improvement. Hang in there, Gerri

Thanks for your help, Gerri. I think that I may be adding to the problem myself. Since I had the surgery, I am so thrilled to be able to see again that I have kept my nose in a book or on the computer, possibly over working them and causing the headaches. I just need to slow down and rest these old eyes. And for anyone who is thinking about eye surgery to correct the double vision, do it! It’s amazing how this surgery has helped my ‘bluz’. Thanks again and take care.

Had the bluz, had the GD bluz,
Had the bluz, had the GD bluz,
Had an eye operation, cause I ain’t got nothin’ to lose.

Woke up this morning, had the sunshine in my eyes,
Well I woke up this morning, had the sunshine in my eyes,
    That ole double vision done gone and said its goodbyes:~}

My scar is still pretty noticable. From all the doctors I have seen they said this will be a great scar once it goes down. A friend of mine had hers out and she said it took a whole year before you couldnt notice it but now you wouldnt even know that she had it out.

I was diagnosed with GD about 7 weeks ago. I am (finally) seeing an Endo on Monday. I too have expreienced headaches. I have tried several things including: increasing my fluid intake, caffiene pills, (not good!), and various other pain relievers with absolutely no success.

I know you can’t diagnose or give any medical advice here, but has anyone had this experience and can anything be done to lessen the frequency and/or intensity of these terrible headaches? They are highly debilitating and occur very frequently, like daily or every other day.

Anyone have any tips. I know that I will see my Endo on Monday, but he can’t fix everything right away, and I don’t feel that I can function properly unless my headaches are relieved!

    Thanks!

    Hi

Headaches are difficult to give advice for. What can work for one maynot work for others.

One thing I would recommend you NOT doing is taking caffee pills, that may cause you to be jittery because you are already hyper. This may even help cause a headache and the duration of one. Remember also that many of the pain mediciation might cause rebound headache. That is a headache caused by the meds. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take any meds, but watch the amount that you take.

Hello! Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Now, let the madness begin. Right?
Anyway, I have a question about eye surgery. I had a one wall decompression surgery last October, but got very little change. I then had my lids lowered in August and am still not happy with my eyes.
I want to do another decompression surgery and need to find another surgeon. Since I am in Florida, I am wondering if I should go to the Mayo clinic in Jacksonville or to Bascom Palmer in Miami. Also, do I need to have an ENT as well?
Hope to hear from someone soon!
    Thanks!

    Hi Millie,

I had mine done at Bascolm Palmer Eye hospital in Miami. I had a three wall done on each eye. Some of the folks in our local support group went to the Mayo in Jacksonville. I think it is a matter of distance for us in Florida. I am partial to Bascolm Palmer because that is where I went.

It depends on how the doctor wants to do the decompression surgery, that will determine if you need an ENT. There are three ways to do the decompression.

One is going under the lower eye lid and a small incision on the side of the nose.

Another is going through the nose and sinus to get at the wall from the back side. For that you would probably have and ENT in attendance.

The third is to go through the inner upper lip, through the sinuses and then to the back wall of the eye.

All three work great and it is pretty much a doctor preference on how they do the surgery and how they were taught to do it.

With my three wall decompressions I went from a 38 to 21 degree if exposure. Normal is 16 to 20 so I am pretty near normal for the eyes.

They adjusted my eye lids a few months after surgery. I look and feel normal now. I can provide a few names for you if you e-mail me.
