Hi- I was diagnosed with Graves 2 years ago. I had RAI and am now Hyopthyroid. I seem to be stabilized on meds.
I had a question about the eye disease. I have had some eyelid puffiness. I also notice that I have a brownish tint to the skin color of my eyelids. It just looks strange and makes me look really tired.
Is this something just unique to me or does it have anything to do with the Graves? Is it something I can correct somehow?
Hello – I’m not familiar with the skin discoloration issue; perhaps others here will chime in with their experiences.
Eye swelling can potentially be a sign of eye involvement with Graves’, but there can be other causes as well, such as allergies.
It wouldn’t hurt to get in to see an experienced ophthalmologist just to get things checked out and put your mind at ease.
Take care!
I am recently diagnosed with hyperthyroid and Graves. I do have the symptoms you referred to: puffy eyelid and some brownish discoloration, plus some pressure at times. My endocrinologist took one look and said it is from the Graves.
As Kimberly said, I am considering an ophthalmologist before it gets worse.I’ve got the brownish discoloration too, looks a little like faint eyeshadow but the part that looks oddest is directly on the outer corners to the side. It is faint though and sometimes I put liquid make up over it when I’m doing the rest of my face. The discoloration appeared at the same time I started having the occasional pains behind the eyes. Fun fun fun.
Hi,
Yes, I have noticed this also. I do not know if it is because of the Tapazole or the Graves. It is mostly on the upper eye area, but my neck is also very mottled. I have been off the Tapazole now since January and I see no improvement with these cosmetic complaints. The puffiness is still there around the eye area, but I can see my neck looking more normal, with some definition. My right eye hurts at times. But still mottled. This is a very interesting disease- I wish it would go away! However, feeling hugely better than when diagnosed in 2010.I was never on Tapazole, so I don’t think it is that.
It sounds like it is probably from the Graves.
I have seen an ophthalmologist a few years ago-probably due for another visit.
The puffiness is due to the Graves, just was not sure of the discoloration.
Makeup seems to hide it ok, but I hate having to wear makeup.
So discouraging, but it could be worse.
Thanks for your thoughts.
