I was diagnosed with Graves Disease about a year go which was followed by a thyroid ablation. I am now experiencing a slightly bulging right eye which began about 3months ago. I have consulted with an eye doctor familiar with thyroid complications but so far no definitive answer. I have some swelling around the eye and a slight feeling of pressure. The doctor did a CT scan which will be followed by a vision field test in a couple of weeks. I was surprised to find myself with this eye problem especially following a thyroid ablation. Anybody else with bulging eyes AFTER having Graves and a thyroid ablation?

Hello – When you mention ablation, I assume that you are talking about RAI, correct? Although eye involvement can occur regardless of which treatment option is selected, studies have shown that there is a higher risk of eye complications for patients who choose RAI, particularly for smokers and for patients who have extremely high antibody levels.

That’s good that you found a specialist who is familiar with thyroid eye disease. You should have a better picture of what is going on after the CT scan and the visual field tests…please keep us posted on how you are doing!
