Had strabismus surgery, both eyes, today. Actual OR time 45 minutes, thought it would take much longer. Was pretty uncomfortable in the recovery room, fentanyl and small amount of dilaudid pretty much fixed that.
I had inferior muscles moved, so eyes a little red at bottom of both eyes. The discomfort feels like really sore muscle discomfort, similar to how you would feel after skiing hard all day, and sore muscles the next day. Not really pain.
I am told that it takes up to a month for muscles to heal, to know final outcome. Even today, I find that I can look straight ahead without tipping my head way back to get rid of the double vision.
I have a post op appt. tomorrow, so will write again tomorrow.
Summary-much shorter time to do surgery than I thought it would be.
-eye muscles sore, eyes dry, using very welcome ointment twice a day, plus usual eye drop
-good overal experience, recovery is nothing compared to having an orbital decompression.
Glad I did it, but, as with every other aspect of TED and Graves’, I want better vision, and all the answers TONIGHT, not a month from now. But a month is better that the almost two years of having TED and being pretty miserable with it.
ShirleyGlad it all went well. Now for the hard part….. waiting.

Sounds like things went great – I am so glad to hear it. One thing my eye dr. said was don’t be afraid to use your eyes – I was nervous at first, but it helps to exercise those muscles! Hope your post op goes well
