Finally close to the point of Eyelid Retraction Surgery….the final recommended surgery when dealing with Graves.

I was dx in 2006 and have had the OD, Muscle Surgeries etc. Still dealing with Double Vision (even after two Strabismus Surgeries) and very uncomfortable eyes – because of retracted lids (both upper and lower). You can see the white’s all around my eyes and my Dr. was going to start with my right eye.

Have been waiting a LONG time (have had Graves since 2006) to address my eyes – and VERY surprised to get a REJECTION letter today (denying coverage) from my (very BIG Insurance Company). Have put an initial call to my Dr. and getting ready to call my carrier. But wanted to put a message here to get any feedback/suggestions.

Has anyone had denial for the Lid Retraction Surgery ?
And if so how were you able to work through the issues?
Is there any supporting reports/documention from the Graves Conference that I could pull to use as supporting when I challenge their denial?

Hello – I haven’t had this surgery, but your eye doctor should be able to help you document the reason for having this procedure done.

If the lid retraction is keeping your eyes from closing all the way or from blinking fully, this can absolutely cause damage to the cornea…so this surgery is a medical necessity, not a cosmetic procedure!

Definitely be persistent with the insurance company to ensure you get the treatment you need.
