If I knew then what I know now… I too stayed off of seafood, salt, iodized salt especially, I use to use sea salt exclusivley. All processed foods, alcohol and caffienated products. Sheesh what does that leave, a miserable person.
I don’t mind most of it, I hated giving up chocolate so I would eat only a taste. especially dark chocolate. I am my own worst enemy when it comes to keeping my diet clean. What I have done is make sure my meds are the same time everyday…no matter what. no deviation and do not DONOT forget. I forgot once and got pregnant LOL.
I can say I never paid attention to whether or not it affected my eyes..never dawned on me till you suggested it. I knew years ago I hated what alcohol did to my eyes, it was like I was allergic to it, so never really took up drinking. I don’t smoke either… My Dr asked me if I smoked when I saw him before my Orb.Decomp. I have noticed not drinking enough fluids though makes me one sore unhappy camper, my head hurts, along with my eyes, my hair.. oh lets not mention hair loss… I always always had long long hair down past my bum, and never never lost as much hair then as I have in the last few years Since being Diagnosed with GD. Even after being radiated, my hairloss is excessive, I can pull rats out of the drain. But I am not bald. Dry scalp dry skin, itchy skin… The eyes, thats another story,I had perfecat vision, I was seeing an eye specialist for two years before GD took over my eyes, and I passed all the test, peripheral vision was great. Now ….well thats another story. I don’t have an answer for the eyes either I await all responses you’ll get with bated breath.
KHELLO EVERYONE!
This may sound weird. But I have been experiencing this for over a month now. A few times a day I see small circles (blinking and in different colors; like planets in alignment; moving fast in split seconds) from the corner of my eyes. Are my eye getting worse? My methimazole dosage was lowered from 5 mg twice a day to 2 1/2 mg twice day. I have mild Graves Opthalmopathy and was diagnosed with Graves Disease last 02/2009. This that I experience regarding theshapes running in fast rhythm, does this say anything about my eye condition? Has anyone of you experienced this?
Do all of you keep a diet restriction? My endo and opthalmologist prescribed nothing in terms of nutrition nor diet regimen except that my endo said i should not eat seafoods. When I followed the strict diet of no fatty food, no dairy products, no sea food and no simple sugar plus no alcohol and iodized salt, my blood test came out well. Perhaps, my ATD was working well on me or is it the combo of good nutrition minus the restricted food? So, to my joy- my T3 and T4 plus TSH normalized. Then, I had a bit of wine and non-alcoholic beer, some desserts, triscuit and they changed my bloodtest result last month! Also, I noticed that since my ATD dosage has been lowered, my falling hair has gone worse. Each time I shampoo my hair, I have lots of hair that fall. But I try not to panic and say mentally that they will grow again. But, seeing them gone out from my head freaks me out. HELP!
Another thing– I noticed as well on how sugar affects my eye condition. The moment I eat anything with simple sugar, my eyes get dry, reddish and itchy. A few hours later, my lids are swollen. In my latest photos- my eyes have become retracted again. They were starting to get better! Then, BANG! They are back!
Also, my endo prescribed a 50,000 i.u. of Vit. D for me, to be taken beginning Monday (tomorrow) once a week. I had my bloodtest done three weeks ago and it appears that I have no Vit. D in my blood. Relatively, I have been diagnosed with OSTEOPENIA last month (thinning of the bones). Since then, I have been taking 1, 500 mg of calcium a day.
Thank you for your reply in advance!!!
Diet changes have never been proven to change thyroid hormone levels, so your improved results would be more likely due to the ATDs successfully treating your condition. TSH doesn’t move much until T4 levels have been changing for a few weeks, so it’s chemically impossible that what you ate one day would be the reason for a different TSH lab result the following day. That said, however, a better diet is ALWAYS a good idea for your body and your own healing. If it makes you feel better, no one’s going to tell you to stop. We just can’t say it has any effect on your thyroid hormone levels based on any reliable scientific studies.
Your hair is another issue entirely ~ when our thyroid hormone levels shift for any reason (even from unhealthy levels to healthy levels), the body interprets this as an emergency event, because in the course of a normal lifetime, our thyroid hormone levels would not be jumping all over the place as they do while we are ill. Under these "SOS" conditions, our body removes resources from the areas it deems non-essential. The first to go are our hair and nails. For that reason, your hair may fall out a bit whenever you change doses of any med intended to deal with your thyroid hormone levels. The hair loss will stop as your levels stabilize again at the new levels. At this point, you’re talking about moving in very small increments, so the hair loss should not continue for very long. Maybe a few weeks, then it will stop, and it will just be a little hair loss, nothing major. In the meantime, be gentle with your hair. Less brushing, more "tousle," if you get my meaning.
I hope that helps!
