Hello – I am not familiar with that procedure — hopefully, one of the other facilitators can jump in here. We don’t recommend specific docs, but you can do a search by state on http://www.thyroid.org, which is the web site for the American Thyroid Association.
Thanks Kimberly. I’ll check it out. There is a second option for surgery, not just through the neck. They actually do it endoscopically through your armpits so you don’t have the scar, and the potential for damaging your vocal cords is minimized. If it’s between that and a scar, I thought I’d look into the alternative. Google around…there’s Youtube videos, etc. Thanks again for the help. Good to know I’m not alone in my problems!
Greetings from Northern California. Just officially diagnosed yesterday after thinking I was going nuts over the past year or so. Antibodies everywhere and I have every physical symptom except for the eye and skin issues. My doctor put me on Antenolol as my resting heart rate is generally between 120-160…and that is at rest! As I am engaged and wanting to start a family soon, so my doctor said surgery is the best option. I’m totally fine with that because I wasn’t about the radioactive therapy, but was wondering if anyone knew of a good doctor to perform the endoscopic thyroidectomy through the armpits. I’d prefer someone in the San Francisco Bay area, but anywhere in the US is fine as long as they know what they are doing! Thanks in advance for your suggestions. ” title=”Smile” /> Stacy
The last I heard azbout Endoscopic thyroidetomies was that they were one time researched in Canada, and then returned to China because that is where the principal researcher is from. James S. can make the most intelligent response. Personally, I don’t think I would classify You Tube as necessarily reliable reference.
I agree re the endoscopic approach through the armpit. There is very little evidence based information about this, and all I could find were a couple ENT practices, whose websites were very heavy on claims and drama. Perhaps it would be helpful to you to try to find someone who has had this procedure. I have had it, and the incision is almost invisible. Different people are different relating to "scars." Some people are keloid formers, some are not. If you have ever scratched yourself and it has healed, take a look at it. If you can barely find it, that is probably what your incision would look like.
I would consider that this is not a good reason to find someone who does this procedure. Consider following the website suggested by one of the facilitators, I do not recall which one, I think Bobbi or Ski, but it is in this topic. -
