Hi Liz, it’s me again. I have posted a couple of times about staying with my gp instead of strictly going to an endo. I was more than happy with him acting as traffic cop through all of the docs, treatments, surgeries and meds. He kept in contact with all of my docs (even my dentist) and I always felt secure that someone was watching out for me when I couldn’t do it myself. A big factor here is what kind of relationship you have with your primary doctor. According to some of the posts on this board, seeing an endo doesn’t guarantee a great doc either. Find someone you like that will work with you. I get a copy of my blood tests, and the doc learned a long time ago to write notes for me as I would forget his instructions before I got out the door.

I lucked out, I had a family practitioner who was very knowledgable about Graves, in fact when I first went in for my physical and had the blood work done, he suspected Graves based on my levels. I was quite comfortable working with him, esp since he was willing to let me take the lead in my treatment. He did ask if I wanted to see an endo, but since that meant driving 100 miles one way every few weeks, I passed. I wasn’t up for that.

Family practioners are generalists, for the most part and are good when it comes to the overall health picture. However, diseases like Graves have a lot of subtle nuances and seeing an endo who is familier with Graves is a very good idea.
