So I think there have been at least two occasions over the last few months where I accidentally took my Synthroid (88 mcg) twice in one day.
Because I’m supposed to take it an hour before I eat or take other meds (I also take 20 mg omeprazole and 10 mg propranolol each morning), I keep it in my bedside drawer and take it the first time I open my eyes in the morning, even if it’s still a few hours before I’m going to get up. Because of this, I think I have accidentally taken it a second time because I was half-asleep the first time I took it. Either that or something is stealing my pills because they come in "sheets" of 7, and originally I started a new sheet on Saturdays, then a few weeks later I needed a new one on a Friday, and in the past week I suddenly needed a new sheet on Thursday.
So I guess I have two questions:
A. will I notice a difference if I take two in one morning?I can’t say that I have felt hyper at all over the past few months. The only weird thing I’ve experienced was my first ever migraine yesterday… with extreme light sensitivity, dizziness, debilitating pain, nausea and vomiting.
B. is there any way to be more accountable as to how and when I take my Synthroid?
Does anyone use pill organizers so you take the correct day’s pill each morning? I’m only 27 and I feel ridiculous needing a pill organizer for one medication. Because I take my omeprazole and propranolol as I’m getting ready in the morning, I never forget a dose or take more by accident – I’m coherent and awake by then ” title=”Smile” />
I have found this method works for me.
I also take other meds. In my experience, I keep the Synthroid separate, rather than having in the same pill thing (I set up meds for three weeks at a time in the seven day long pill things.) For the Synthroid, I have tried two things. First, I had the synthroid in a separate pill thing, but that was easy to confuse the boxes when it was dark and I was sleepy.
Now I leave the Synthoid in the bottle, along with a glass of water by my bed. I am sure that it is 1/2 hour before I eat, I don’t do an hour. I am assuming that you are taking the slow release omeprazole once a day, and that you are to take it one hour before meals? And that it to be taken one hour before you eat?
With your Synthroid, you could:
1. leave the blister pack by your bed. But throw it on the floor after you take one, pick it up when you get up. (:
2. Take only one pill out of the blister pack, (leave the pack in the bathroom) put the Synthroid with your other meds.I know exactly what you mean about those pill containers! Especially when you are 29, and don’t want to bother with that. But I find that they work well. If you don’ t want to do the long pill containers, you could buy those tiny ones, that have two sides. They are round. Then before you go to bed, set up your two meds in one side, and one Synthroid in the other, along with a glass of water. Maybe this would work best for you.
Regarding your question about side effects of taking twice the dose, I am not sure. I would think that you would not feel any different. Over the years, before I came up with m7 "method," I have taken twice the dose by accident, and I have completely forgotten (or did not bring with me when I stayed overnight someplace) and did not take it at all.
Maybe, one of these ideas might work for you.

shirleyI have my synthroid in a bottle by my bed. At night before turning off the light I put a pill on the cover of the bottle (it’s a Walgreen’s pill bottle with the cap inverted). Then in the morning I take that pill. You might want to take all 7 pills out of the bubble wrap and put them in a weekly pill minder by your bed. Then you just take the appropriate day. I know with our Grave’s minds, things are confusing enough.
We never did get together to compare notes. Call me or email me after the first of the year and maybe we can meet up.
JoanieShirley, I like the idea of keeping one pill on my bedside table and leaving the rest of the pack (I’m still on free samples, yay!) in the bathroom. And to be honest, both my endocrinologist and my gastroenterologist told me it’s OK to take all 3 pills at the same time and that I can eat a half-hour later. Most days, I take them within 15-30 minutes because as you mentioned, I need to get that slow-release omeprazole in my system so it takes effect before I eat breakfast. I have never seen the round pill case you mentioned but I will look for one.
I’m not comfortable with the throwing-the-pack-on-the-floor idea simply because I have a curious pup who, although rarely, sometimes gets out of bed before I do and explores until I’m up.
Joanie, I would probably still find a way to take two pills on a morning when I’m really exhausted and take one when I look at the clock to see how much longer I can sleep and then another one when I actually wake up.
And yes, I agree! I’ll be back from Massachusetts on Jan. 2. Let’s do coffee or something. I’ll send you a private message when I’m back.
