    Hello all,

Does thyroidectomy surgery qualify for a Short-Term Disability?
I have a short-term disability coverage where I am eligible for 100% for upto 4 weeks.
I don’t plan on being off for 4 weeks, but perhaps 2 weeks at maximum and resume my work.
I have a typical 8am to 4pm job in an office, where I work mostly alone with my computer, I rarely need to talk on the phone. It’s mainly emailing and data entry. Everyone has their iphone / ipads plugged, so it’s a very quiet working environment.

I only plan on disclosing the detail of my surgery to the benefits department, who normally takes care of all the leave of absences, insurance claim related documents. The reason is, in my previous employment, I had a boss who, when I told her about my Graves Disease, used it against me by saying, “You know, ever since you were diagnosed with your thyroid problem, you seem a lot more stressed out and irritated.” I am so glad that I no longer work for this boss, cause this comment got me very upset.

My current employer is much nicer and I work in a nice team overall. However, I’ve decided to never ever disclose my medical condition to people at work, after my experience at the previous employment.

If TTX does not qualify for short-term disability, then I will either take my vacation days or a leave without pay. I do not want this surgery to jeopardize my employment.

LaurelM and DIY both had recent TT’s. Read their posts.

Mine qualified. I was going to use vacation time but when the HR Director heard about that he insisted I use Short Term Disability instead. I had planned to be out 2-3 weeks but at my post-op check-up asked my surgeon to keep me out another week (total of 4) and then send me back for half days for a week.

Uninterrupted paychecks and a wonderful vacation. :)
