Does anyone know if a total thyroidectomy is protective as far as developing the eye complications associated with Grave’s disease?

Hello – I’ve seen a couple of smaller studies indicating that thyroidectomy might be of benefit in existing cases of thyroid eye disease:

However, I haven’t seen any studies as to whether surgery prevented *future* cases of thyroid eye disease. And I have heard a couple of anecdotal stories from patients who did go through total thyroidectomy and then later had eye issues, so I don’t think there are any guarantees of preventing TED with surgery.

What is the average weight gain for people with Graves disease post thyroidectomy? Any strategies for keeping the weight off while getting on thyroid replacement?

Hello – Hopefully, you will get some responses here from those who have been through surgery, although I suspect the results will vary…some probably had no issues at all, while others may have struggled with weight gain.

I saw a paper at a poster presentation at a medical conference a couple of years ago. I was not able to locate the info online, but I recall that on *average*, there was a gain of a few pounds for Graves’ patients following thyroidectomy.

I know from personal experience that weight issues are very frustrating, but definitely keep in mind that the priority after surgery is to let the body heal…that’s the time to take care of yourself and make sure that you are taking in plenty of good nutrients.

I had a TT in February and have basically felt fantastic since then. I have enough energy to hit the gym 3 times a week at an hour each time, but the weight loss is taking time. I have only had my bloodwork checked 6 weeks after surgery, and my TSH was in the normal range. I’m due to redraw and see my endo Dr. in a few weeks. She did tell me that if I was having difficulty losing the weight to let her know and we’d draw my blood earlier to check my levels. I have been on a dose of 100mcg of Levo since surgery and not had it adjusted at all. I have also only lost 4 pounds, but it is better than gaining it like I was prior to surgery. I didn’t expect it to be easy, but it is coming off slowly. My guess is that I am slightly hypo and my Levo needs to be adjusted, but for now I am happy having the energy to at least try and do something about my excess weight. I know it is different for everyone, but I hope this helps some.
