I just watched an episode of a show that has an actress that I’m convinced has some Graves’ eye symptoms – pretty obvious lid retraction. I feel for her because sometimes people make comments about her eyes when they should be talking about the show or her character. I won’t say who I think it is…doesn’t feel right somehow?

Anyway, I wonder do others here notice actors on tv or just people in your life and wonder? Sometimes I get a bit too forceful telling people to get their thyroids checked and what tests to order! Usually these people have hypo rather than hyper symptoms.

I’m sure part of it is a reaction to what I’ve gone through, but I spent so many years getting misdiagnosed. One time years before official Graves’ onset I even had an abnormal high TSH and the doctor blew it off even when I mentioned a family history of thyroid disease! That was about thirty pounds ago. I just wish everyone were more educated about thyroid disease and no one had to suffer being undiagnosed and searching for the right help.

    Hi Raspberry,
My experience was the reverse – I was the one other people were wondering about for years, with my bulging eyes, shaky hands, and anxious ways. When I finally got diagnosed, everyone said they “just knew it!” Now, like you, I notice signs in people around me, too, and if they’re relatives or close friends, I’ll mention it. As everyone around here says, you do feel so much better, once things are in hand.

Obviously, you don’t want to start rumors in case this individual *doesn’t* have Graves’, but maybe you can send a direct message Tweet (which is not public) or see if you can find an e-mail for this person’s management? It’s certainly worth a try!

I remember reading a few months ago that a reality TV star in Australia was diagnosed with thyroid issues when a doctor who had watched the show noticed her goiter and contacted her!

Flora, I guess most people around me just thought I was just being an anxious reactionary person. One time I had someone imply I was on drugs! Seems like really only the eye symptoms can be definitive on looking at someone and even that it’s hard to say unless it is severe. The rest of the symptoms could be caused by so many things. That’s great you are spreading awareness about it too.

Kimberly, I’ve never tried to contact a public person before. I’ll have to look at how to do it and then of course I’ll feel like a jerk if nothing is wrong with her other than an unsuccessful plastic surgery. Still I’ve been watching the show for three years and her eyes had the most retraction I’d seen this past week. And yeah, I don’t want to start any rumors about her so I won’t ever mention her name online. I know there are people in my real life I would never tell that I had Graves because I don’t think they’d handle it respectfully. Still it would be nice if more famous people who had Graves came out with it to help with public knowledge. Geeesh I’m wordy today….that’s all folks.

    Hi Raspberry,

One thing I have noticed is that after I was diagnosed with Graves and mentioned it to a few people they all knew someone who had thyroid disease, either Graves or Hashimoto.
All of a sudden there were a bunch of people, even some I had known for a while, who were taking meds for it. None had obvious signs of TED, but it surprised me that evidently I was the only one talking about it.

    Hugs.
    Barbra.
