I have not posted in forever. Graves and eye problems started in 2005… have had orbital decompression, and five other lid surgeries, etc on eyes. I still work full time and its just getting harder and harder. I use restasis 2x a day, and unless something else goes wrong, I am done with the “looks” but the annoying eyes!! I thought when I was on this site before someone had mentioned that they got disability, not due to the eye problems, but to the Graves itself. I would appreciate any information anyone would have. So tired. -K

Hi Kathy, I think you definitely have a good chance. I have talked to an attorney about Social Security Disability and he said that Graves’ was one of the things he thought might be accepted.

Most people get turned down the first time so you have to keep trying.

If you can prove you are not able to work because of your eyesight, I think you have a legitimate case.

As for myself, I was denied. I don’t have eye involvement (not yet) and I was refused but try it, you never know. Good luck!

Hello – Getting a claim through for Graves’ disease can be very challenging, as it’s difficult to *quantify* the symptoms. Also, if you are currently working, that will result in an automatic denial.

It’s helpful to have an experienced disability attorney on your side to guide you through this process. As Karen said, most claims are initially denied, so you have to keep working the system. Here is a site that offers attorney referrals: http://www.nosscr.org/ Keep in mind that by law, a disability attorney cannot charge you until your case is settled, although they *can* bill for reimbursement for reasonable expenses such as photocopying medical records.

I personally know of two individuals who made successful claims; one had severe vision issues, and the other had Graves’ in addition to another autoimmune condition.

Thanks to you both for the information. I know I cannot do anything now as I am working ( struggling) fulltime. I am done with eye surgeries, as I said, but eyes bother me immensely. I will check out the website and try to go forward with this. Graves itself is something to deal with, with added eye problems, makes it even worse. Will check out a few things and update later…thank you, thank you !! So discouraged at the moment. No one “gets” the eye problems, except my surgeon.
