My endocrinologist and opthalmologist didn’t give me a diet restriction nor prescribed supplements for me to take. However, upon reading books on GD and GO, plus being in several support groups online, I realized on how many of us with this disease take care by having the right diet ~ as it can impact one’s healing process. On my own, for a week now- I have added FISH OIL OMEGA 3 CONCENTRATE in my line up of supplements, aside from CALCIUM CITRATE, VIT. C, VITAMINS and MINERALS, GRAPE SEED EXTRACT with WHOLE GRAPE, and 1/2 a tablet of ASPIRIN (162 mg). Instead of coffee and hot coco, I now drink GREEN TEA daily and have refrained from eating food with cheese, salt, milk, yogurt (dairy products), saturated fat, seafood, and sugar. I also have stopped drinking alcohol- white wine, especially. I noticed on how my eyes would react strongly to wine and sugar. This, I observed last week when I forgot that alcohol is bad. I had three glasses of wine and immediately, my eyes felt so itchy, and then became reddish…an hour later, my eyelids were swollen, dry and puffy. Likewise with sweets. QUESTION: Because I am hyperthyroid, am I ok to eat seafood? Won’t I need even a tinge of food rich in iodine for my own nutritional needs?
Thanks for your input! ” title=”Wink” />
Hey that all sounds really interesting. When I was first diagnosed my Endo noted that I was vegetarian and as I am married to a Japanese (like you I done a wee bit of research) and I pointed out that I was eating lots of tofu/ seaweed and was on a strict soya diet because of my asthma (dairy not particularly good for asthmatics) I supplemented even spread for your toast etc with Soya spread – anyway he did say to come off the soya diet but that it was ok to eat Tofu on an occasional basis.
Not much help but would be interested to hear what others were advised and what they did.

Many people are sensitive to the sulfites in wine. This problem is not exclusive to people with Graves. Sulfites can cause allergy like symptoms (swelling, watering, burning, gritty eys, and runny nose, etc). Sulfites are also used to help preserve some dried fruits. Some people with asthma are warned to avoid them as they may exacerbate symptoms. For people with a sulfite sensitivity, it is important to read the ingrediant lable.
