Hi. I’m so glad I found this forum as I am trying to come to terms with what is happening to my body and mind. It’s good to know that I am not alone. I absolutely hate what this has done to me and hope and pray that I will see some relief soon. I have been on a beta-blocker and 40mg of Methomizole for 3 weeks. Unfortunately it took an ER visit to get a diagnoses. I have been been aggressive with my doctors all summer knowing something wasn’t right. I am so thankful for the doctor in the ER. She was so understanding of my symptoms and the fact that I was so tired of feeling this way.
I have had a little relief. My pain and tremors are gone about half the time now but I’m too exhausted to do anything. I also deal with depression and am starting to wonder if it is getting worse or if it is just the disease. My doctor did increase my prozac but I’m still very down.
I am also playing with diet too. Any suggestions here?
Thanks and I’m glad I found this! Leb
Hello and welcome – Methimazole starts working right away to block production of *new* thyroid hormone, but it can take a few weeks for the body to burn off its existing stores. Hopefully, you will start to see even more relief in the next couple of weeks.
There is no one agreed-upon diet for Graves’, but it’s always a good idea to focus on whole foods rather than processed foods. Also, while you are hyper, avoiding large sources of iodine (such as those packaged seaweed snacks) is a good idea. The thyroid uses iodine to make *more* thyroid hormone – and that’s the last thing you need right now!
Also, definitely stay in touch with the doc who is regulating your prozac – you might find that you get some relief from the depression issues as your thyroid function returns to normal. This video from one of our past conferences might be of interest:

Hi, I too am newly diagnosed. I have been sick for months (it started with heart issues) and I was too stubborn to see a doc. Then when I finally did they spent months and tons of money putting me through every heart test imaginable. Luckily all that was wrong was tachycardia and elevated BP. Finally after months of that and tremors and insomnia and weight gain and fatigue and anxiety, and so on, I finally went back to the doc and begged for a blood test for my thyroid. So I just got my TSI back, it is extremely high, and my TSH doesn’t even register with the new tests. I too am so happy to have found this forum and hope to connect with others facing similar struggles and those who have been living with them as well. I cannot offer you advice as I am so new to this and am in mass confusion right now, but I can offer support and say that you are not alone, and now, neither am I.
