I haven’t been able to see properly for the past 2 days. It’s as if I have been staring at a light bulb for too long. Everything is blurry and no matter how wide I open eyes, the glare is still there. I prefer to keep the curtains closed cause it’s so much easier to see. If a considerable distance away, it takes me longer to recognize people I’ve known for years. I’ve even started conversations with people thinking they were someone else only to realize once I got closer that they had no idea who or what I was talking about. It’s been 6 months since I got new glasses and someone mentioned to me that it may be time for a new prescription.
My eyes are very swollen so I’ve started icing them for about an 1hr 2xs a day-and I notice that when I’m done it takes a while before I can see anything.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Hello – I’m not familiar with that as a classic symptom of TED, although hopefully, you will get some other responses.
When the optic nerve is being compressed in TED, the more classic issue is having trouble seeing colors (i.e. reds suddenly start looking more orange or brown).
It does sound like something that you will want to have your eye doc check out ASAP, though!
Take care!
That’s familiar to me. I have had TED for 3 years. As Kimberly said, I suggest you find an ophthalmologist who is familiar with TED. Ask around first.
ShirleyHi Jaqe,
I find my eyes get quite blurry at times, not to the extent yours do. I think blurriness its partly due to eye dryness and also TED. I also have my room curtains closed if the light is too strong for my eyes and carry my sunglasses in my purse everywhere.
Ive been getting this strange sensation lately in one eye, like the middle bit of my eye… cornea i think is inflamed, its like i have a contact lens in but dont, is that normal with TED? I see an opth regularly and TED specialist who i will see at the end of the month.
Anyone also have swollen upper lids near the lash line only, or red veins on their upper eyelids that are visible?
I have had a lot of vision problems with TED including what you describe, tho maybe not so dramatic. You do not mention any double vision, but the blurriness could be a lesser version of that or a precursor. I have, in addition to the ophthalmologists with whom I have worked, a wonderful optometrist who understands the illness. He prescribed prism glasses (not freinels which did not work at all and really made my vision blurry.) I used the same glasses for 1 1/2 years but last spring, a year after orbital decrompression, which was quite successful, my vision started to deteriorate. The optometrist did a very extensive work up and found 1) my refraction had actually changed and 2) I needed addional prisms. I got new glasses and voila, I could see and read etc.
But the glare problem persisted, of course because the eyes are open too wide with TED. I knew I would be scheduling a lid surgery to lower the lid and reduce the light entering the eye which also dries cornea.
I had that surgery a week ago which seems successful but it will be a while before I know for sure. So several things: Where are you on the inflammation, stability curve with your TED and are you a candidate for any of the surgeries? Has your refraction changed? Are you using enough artifical tears and things like refresh PM at night to keep your eyes lubricated? Has your optometrist explored the idea of putting prism in your eyeglasses?
I hope this is helpful.
HI S[ARERIB, I have TED, I live in Seattle. I had upper eyelid lowering surgery last Wednesday (9/5) I am having quite a bit of discomfort iwith an abraded cornea. How is your post op course going? He put a contact over the whole eye today to see if that will give me some relief. Says it will heal.
I’ll send you a PM.Shirley
