I was started on 25 mg of Atenolol on March 13th.

I was started on 20 mg of Methimazole on March 21st. My levels were pretty high.

On March 23rd, I was increased to 50 mg of Atenolol because my anxiety shot up (duh, I wonder why?)

We went on vacation to Florida and my pulse and bp bounced around still pretty good, but nothing outrageous.

We came back on April 1st and due to the lab running the wrong tests on my bloodwork (they were supposed to run antibody testing, but redid my first labs), I had to go and give blood again. My levels were still pretty high(barely came down at all) so my endo said let’s increase to 30 for two weeks when we will draw labs again (that’s next week). I started the increase on Friday (5 days ago)

I got my period on Saturday. I also saw a naturopath who did accupuncture on me. My pulse and BP have dropped wayyy back down, so I dropped back down to 25 mg of Atenolol. My bp with just this one pill is hovering around 100/68, sometimes a few higher and sometimes lower, and my pulse has dropped to the low 70’s, high 60’s. I feel wiped out. I’m cold. (it was gorgeous here on Sun and Monday (mid 60’s) and I was still wearing a long sleeve shirt and a sweatshirt while the kids were running around without coats. I have moments where I feel warm, but like right now, my fingers are cold and I have a sweater on to keep warm (it’s chilly again here) and I had to turn the heat up to take the chill out of my body. On Sunday, I felt so lethargic with the 50 mg of Atenolol. I do feel better on the 25 mg, but wonder if I need it at all because I still feel tired.

I guess my question through all my long windedness, is it possible that my levels dropped THAT MUCH in basically a week’s time to make that much of a difference on my body?

Just a week ago, my levels were still high (endo said it was still early – 10 days in – but she wanted the increase anyway for two weeks). I know you can’t give me medical advice, I guess I’m just wondering if it’s worth a call to the doctor or if this is more the “normal” ups and downs when taking the meds. My next lab is supposed to be Monday.

    Thanks.

I get my labs done every 2 weeks or so. In my experience, yes, my levels can rise and/or fall that fast. I recently had my levels almost double in 11 days on a lowered methimazole dose.

There is a certain amount of yoyo-ing that occurs while trying to get the correct ATD dose figured out. Once you hit “the sweet spot” you will know.

    Good luck in your treatment!

Thanks for the response! This has only been 8 days, so maybe I will wait and see how it goes over the next few days. I would be happy if I responded that quickly.

Hello – Given the symptoms you are experiencing, it’s at least worth a call to your doctor’s office to see if they can get a set of labs for you more quickly.

I remember feeling a lot of fatigue as my levels were dropping into the normal range, but it sounds like you are experiencing other symptoms as well.

    Take care!

I don’t know if it’s “symptoms” or just par for the course. I feel more shaky today, but my bp and pulse are doing well.
