Yes…the big C. My pathology report came back and I got the staggering news, papillary thyroid carcinoma. i’m still in shock but so glad I listened to my instincts and did the surgery. So now I wait for 3 weeks to see my endo for more answers. Also it showed that I have Hashi’s instead of Graves, but I had a very high TSI level (529). So I’m a bit confused on that and hope to get that cleared up.

So sorry to hear your news Marie…but, if this helps, I’m a 5 yr. breast cancer survivor and I find dealing with GD and the TED is much worse than ever having dealt with my cancer, chemotherapy, etc. We are STRONG individuals and this journey will make you stronger than you ever thought possible. Just know our thoughts and prayers are with you through this experience. Hang in there and please let us know how everything goes at the Endo’s office as you recover from this shocking news.

    Marie,
So sorry to hear of your news. I know that you are glad to have it though instead of wondering. Have they mentioned anything about treatment beyond the removal of your thyroid yet? Hope you are getting to spend a lot of time with your boys as you recover from the surgery. Please let us know what happens and we will certainly whisper a prayer for good things.

    Hi,
I so sorry to read your news. One of my very best friends had thyroid cancer in her mid-twenties. We are both now approching 40. For her, they knew they were treating cancer from the start. She did not have any other thyroid issues. She had a complete thyroidectomy and a bit stronger dose of RAI than Grave’s patients typically receive. She also had follow-up testing for 5 years to ensure that there were no traces of thyroid tissue left anywhere in her body. I know that there is a thyroid cancer organization web site
    http://www.thyca.org/
that you may find useful. She also became involved in Gilda’s Club and benefited from a lot of support from there.

She is really doing very well today and you would never guess that she had ever had cancer. I remember her saying that her doctor told her that if you had to have a cancer, this was the one to get because they are so successful with its treatment.

I am wishing all the best for you.

Oh I am so sorry … take heart though, my cousin who has young children too, recently had thyroid cancer too. She had her thyroid removed and is doing fine. She has not needed further treatments to date (it was removed last December). She is doing very well and has told me this is absolutely the best cancer to get – since survival rates are very high. You are not alone and I am sure you will recover well.

I echo all the sentiments ~ it’s a tough word to hear, so I hope you’re doing okay. Survival rates are extremely high, the ThyCa website is a really good resource, and we’ll be here for you too (we don’t mind that it didn’t turn out to be Graves’, we love you anyway). <img decoding=” title=”Wink” />

I can only imagine what you are dealing with, feeling, experiencing, etc. You are ahead of things in many ways. DO contact ThyCA. They are a wealth of information, specific for the type of cancer you have. They have many support groups, and an annual conference coming up in Boston (I think). We have worked together for many years, and they are very caring, supportive, knowledgeable and true activists.

I’m fairly new to this forum and don’t know anyone that well yet, but please know I’m thinking of you and I’m sure all will work out. The big "c" is not a word anyone wants to hear no mater how treatable it is, so I understand all your fears and concerns.

Sorry for the long delay in a update. It’s a good thing though, I feel awesome!! I’ve never felt better. I’m on 100mcg synthroid and that’s got me theraputic. I didn’t have to do RAI b/c my tumor was so small. So instead they are going to monitor my thyroglobulin levels to monitor the cancer.
One interesting think with follow-up appt’s and path reports, they think that I had Graves, Hashi’s and Thyroid Cancer. So it was a good thing it’s gone <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />
