Yes, unfortunatly, major stress — whether it’s "good" stress or "bad" — can cause hyperthyroidism to recur.

I was also wondering if on this site there happens to be an endocrinologist who can confirm your answer?

I’m not an endo, but I’ve been on ATDs for almost four years. I’ve had four hypER episodes during that time, and I can trace each one to a stressful event. A small dosage increase has always gotten things back under control.

So for almost an entire year now I have had normal labs on my thyroid since having hyperthyroid and being successfully treated for it for about the length of 6 months – a year. Well I was in a traumatic car accident on June 3rd. I had my first thyroid lab draw since the accident just the other day and my doctor called me earlier to tell me that my thyroid has come back hyper again. She has me go in for labs only once a month now since they used to come in normal but since it is saying hyper again I am going to be a pin cushion again for a while. how super frustrating… anyways now she has me back on propranolol and on July 6th she is going to draw my blood again to see if it goes back down… until that appointment she doesn’t want to start me on any anti-thyroid medication. Anyways my question is could the stress from the car accident and all the red tape insurance stuff be causing my hyperthyroid to recur? I’m telling you I am super frustrated about this… since the accident its been nothing but problem after problem with my body. I am still recovering from my concussion, and on top of that I am going to appointments three times a week to a physical therapist and so far they have scheduled for four weeks of appointments… I guess my pelvis is all out of shape and crooked, a few ribs are out of place and my neck and numerous areas in my back are needing work… and then my hyperthyroid decides to return. This accident has caused me so many issues. :x
