I’ve been on Decadron for at least 6 months for headaches. My WBC are extrememly high, even tho I’m on methamazole until April when my endo can do the uptake test. My PA wants me to stop the Decadron cold turkey for 2 weeks so she can get a baseline of my WBC. My concern is two fold. 1. can this cause Adrenal failure and 2 could this cause a thyroid storm? I had a brain bleed stroke after having my baby in June of 07 and that is part of the reason I’m on the Decadron because of the headaches. It is the only thing we have found that works to stop them. Any idea’s anyone? I go to see her in the AM.

This is clearly a question for experts. Sorry we can’t be of more help. I suggest if you have any reservations about what your PA wants to do that you get a second medical opinion before you have this done.

Well…here goes nothing or everything…not sure which. She said to find out if I have an infection we need to stop the Decadron and see what my blood looks like in 2 weeks. She gave me Vicoden for the headaches…up to 12 a day. If I have a headache for more then 24 hours..go to the ER. I asked my Endo about this very same thing a week ago and he said basically it was up to her and me…so I am assuming he didn’t think it would be a problem.

Have you tried Butal for the headaches? I get severe migranes and that’s the ONLY thing that works for me. You might discuss it with your doc if you haven’t tried it yet. It’s a non-narcotic.

    Good Luck!!!

I can answer part of that. Stopping the decadron will not put you in a thyroid storm. Whether or not you can quit cold turkey depends on what strength you are taking. It is approximately 10 times stronger than prednisone.

Make sure the PA can explain the risks and benefits of abrupt cessation.

Thanks Cowgirl up….I’ll ask about it…I’m kinda limited to what I can take from the brain bleed stroke I had…but will try anything at this point.

Nancy….Thank you. That put’s my mind at ease somewhat. Thanks a million.
