I have several autoimmune diseases and my Sed rate and C-reactive protein are always normal. Those tests are strongly associated with generalized inflammation, as you said, and can be associated with heart disease or several autoimmune diseases, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, but are not specific for any one condition.
Try taking supplements such as Fish Oil capsules and Coenzyme Q10, or any antioxidant. Those are two really good ones. You can get fish oil capsules at Costco that are coated so they are absorbed in the intestine and you don’t get that fishy aftertaste, and you only have to take one a day. They’re called the enteric coated capsules, I believe. I used to get nauseous on the other kind.
More to the point, not everyone with Graves’ Disease has elevated C-Reactive Protein, if that’s what you were asking.
I think I just read in my pharm book that they are finding folic acid is also helpful with this. I will look it up again for sure and post. Cathy
Hi everyone – I’ve had Graves since 2006 and am scheduled for a thyroidectomy on May 6th.
On an unrelated note, I just had a base line cardiac stress test because of a very strong family history of heart disease (with the surgery coming up, I wanted to feel safe). The stress test, EKG, echocardiogram were all perfect – not one problem. However, on the blood work, my C-Reactive Protein level was very high (25, with the normal range being 1-3).
I’m told this measures inflammation in the body. On a related note, I’ve had a high sedimentation rate on my blood tests of the past few years, which also measures generalized inflammation. Whenever I’ve read what could cause this, there always seems to be a mention of autoimmune disease, "like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis."
I’ve never seen thyroid disease mentioned, so I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this, or if anyone ever had a high C-Reactive Protein result.
Any info is much appreciated!
Karen
Yes – Folic acid reduces blood levels of homocysteine – or so says my pharmacology book. I just bought some since my cholesterol is high. C
