I have had bulging eyes ever since being diagnosed in 2008. Because of this I have a lot of extra skin on my upper eyelids. I’m wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and if anyone has had surgery to correct it. If so, did your insurance cover it? I don’t think I’m a vain person but I have become very self conscious about this to the point where I avoid being in any pictures. It would just be nice to know I’m not alone in this. Thanks!!

I suggest you see an ophthalmologist, telling your history, asking, if you don’t know, if you have had mild TED. It is an oculofacial doc who does these procedures. They are all over the place. Go to a couple, get some opinions on upper eyelid surgery to correct this.

Hello – I agree with Shirley that a consult with an ophthalmologist would be helpful. One discussion to have is whether the procedure is for medical or cosmetic purposes.

If an insurance company sees a procedure coded as cosmetic, a claim is likely to be denied.

Is this fair? Not really. But it’s the system we’re stuck with right now. As one of our regular conference presenters has pointed out, if someone was in a car accident, it’s pretty much accepted that that individual *should* be restored as closely as possible to their appearance before the accident. TED patients deserve the same treatment…but right now, this is often an uphill battle.
