Ever go in for blood work only to have them ask you to go back and have another done?
Here is what you can do to save yourself some time:
Get your blood work done no later than the day before your Dr’s visit. That way they can call in and ask for further tests to be done, your blood is kept on fild two to three days. So make sure the appt is not a friday or a Monday.
Also make sure you are hydrated before getting your blood work done, this makes it easier for the nurses to draw blood, being warm and also having had some sort of excercise helps as well.
You need to know that your blood has to be processed…or something like that after you give blood so make sure you don’t go in when they are closing.. a half hour is what i’ve been told is needed.
I hope this helps and make sure you eat as well.
KKailjia, great info
Just wanted to point out that there are times where blood work of any kind might have to be done while fasting so please make sure you speak with dr. and or call the lab to find out what is needed.
Also exercise of any kind for Graves’ patience can increase their blood but also their blood pressure/heart rate. So please verify with your dr. if exercise is ok and if so what kind of exercise is ok to do. You don’t want to walk run a little bit when you already have high blood pressure or a high pulse rate. That would sooooo not be cool.Kailjia, I have also done the whole walked in on friday right before closing, went in on a monday and went in having not eaten anything and boy was it hard for them to get anything. She was mad!!! LOL
A couple more hints:
Exercise may be just parking your car at the end of the parking lot and walking, or taking the stairs. Ideally, you will have your blood for thyroid tests taken in the morning, WITHOUT taking your morning dose (if you take it in the morning) – every time you have bloodwork done. You can have your morning coffee, a light breakfast, but have your thyroid level consistent. If you are having other work done at the same time, you may need to actually be fasting. The comment about good hydration is really important. You cannot imagine how hard it is to get the needle through the skin, much less into the vein, on someone that is dehydrated. Good Luck!I never knew this . I would think it would also be a good idea to be hydrated before getting an IV for surgery put in also. But since you can’t have anything after midnight, I would guess it would be a good idea to drink plenty of water the day before. If there is any other suggestions for when you will need an IV put in , that would be appreciated. I am sure I am not the only one that hates the thought of an IV.
I found that since I know which arm is easier to give blood, I insist they use the same spot. I also use a hot pack on the spot prior to blood work. For operations its different since they use a different vein. BLood works comes from an entirely different area.
I agree with the excercise, just walking is good excercise what ever you can to get the blood flowing. Do not over exert yourself it could cause problems as well. -
