    Hello

I’ve been in remission from GD for 2.5 years but have been experiencing Graves like symptoms for about a year to varying degrees and not always at the same time; anxiety, depression, palpitations, anger, irritability, internal tremor, breathing changes (also asthmatic but under control), racing heart (though pulse remains at 80), increased bowel movements, joint pain (mainly in hands), lack of concentration, poor memory. The degree and extent of my symptoms are nowhere near when I was first diagnosed with Graves.

During this past year my thyroid bloods have been tested twice, most recently just before Xmas. My TSH, T3 and T4 have remained within the normal range since achieving remission. I’ve been told my symptoms are hormone, depression or stress related. All of which are quite possible. I’m 42 and am currently being treated for PMS. I was also treated for a vitamin d deficiency last year (now with lower dose supplement). Both treatments have helped but not alleviated all of the symptoms listed above. The ones I am particularly struggling with are the anxiety, internal tremor, racing heart and joint pain.

Please can you tell me, should my antibodies also be being routinely tested?
    Any help greatly appreciated!

    Thank you.

Hello – We are fellow patients, not doctors, but here are a few thoughts…

First, you might consider comparing your labs over time. Even for levels that are in the “normal” range, some patients report having symptoms as levels were trending either hyper or hypo.

If your levels are indeed normal and stable, it might be helpful to get a second opinion to see if there might be another issue that could benefit from treatment.

If your insurance allows, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to have antibodies tested. However, the challenge is that if your thyroid levels are normal, there isn’t a specific treatment to target the antibodies. Antibodies can still have an impact even with normal thyroid levels; for example, patients can still have eye and skin issues from Graves’, even with normal thyroid levels.

Hopefully, you can get some answers on this!
